ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JANUARY 23RD, 1936 Here are shown pictures from the life of His Most Excellent Majesty, Edward the Eighth, by the Grace of God of Great Britain. Ireland and of the Briâ€" tish Dominions beyond the Seas, King. Defender of the Faith, Emperor Oof India. Born June 23, 1894, King Edâ€" ward ascended the throne on the death of King Georgs V. who died January 20th. 1936. Edward is the eldest of four sons: his full name is Edward Albert Christian â€"George Andrew â€" Patrick David. As Prince of Wales, Britain‘s new King was known and loved the world over; he was called Britain‘s "happy bachelor," and his life has been replete with incident. He is perhaps Britain‘s most democratic King,. As Prince of Wales, his travels took him to every corner of the globeâ€"from his Alberta ranch to the heart of African and Indian jungles. His amazing verâ€" satility made him expert in many sporis, and his tremendous vitality and energy kept him constantly on the move,. As sportsman, as Prince, as man, and now as King, his motto has ever been: "I am just as you; please treat me as an equal." Since he reached marriageable age, his name has been many times romantically linked with scores of women. But he has never married and asconds the throne as a bachelor King. The new monarch is shown in the oval above from a recent portrait of him taken in Scottish uniâ€" form. In the layout he is shown in fAying togs. As Prince of Wales, he was many times warned, finally :n to fly his own acroplane, although he is an expert pilot. The next picture above, at extreme loft top shows him as a boy of ecleven from a photo taken in 1905. Next to the oval portrait he is shown in American Indian garb from a picture taken during his visit to his Alborta ranch in 1926, Extreme right shows him with his father the late King George at Epsom Downs. Both King Edward and his father were enâ€" thusias‘ic race fans. Immediately to the l<ft, lower picture, the new King is first shown as a business man. Deâ€" spite his wanderings, he was most atâ€" tentive to his personal affairs, and is shown here with ¢two secretaries. Durâ€" ing the great war, as of Wales he achieved tremendous popularity in France, where he took an active part in the conflict, many times coming under fire. Ho is shown above at the lower left, from a phot> taken in France in uniform as a lieutenant. He is next pictured on horseback in his uniform as Coloncl of the Welsh Guards. Alâ€" ways an enthusiastic horseman, as Prince of Walées he took part in many horse races, resulting frequently in tumbles. So often was he injured that he was ordcred to forsake his favourite sport. In the fourth pictwe he is Prognosticators of bettsr times have their own theorics concerning the variâ€" ous factors involved in a return to greater prosperity, so frequently indiâ€" »wcated by the upward turn shown in graphs and charts. L. L. Grahill, genâ€" ecral baggage agent for the Canadian National Railways, also has his theory of returning prosperity, which is supâ€" ported by tangible evidence. This is the ’fact, that patrons of the railway leave their purses and handbags on trains and Mr. Grabill argues, with considerâ€" able logic, that if money was so awfulâ€" ly scarce why would people be so farâ€" getful as to leave it behind them? No less than 20 purses and handbags were found on trains of the Canacian National Railways within the past month. Aside from causing temporary constearnation, the missing articles, with their contents, were not a permanent loss, however, thanks to the honesty of railway emunlovees, for they were all shown clearing a hedge. Inset in céenâ€" tre is one of the most interesting rEécent pictures ever taken of King Edward showing him leaning over the rail at an English race track just as anxious about his choice as the ordinary people with whom he mingled. At extreme right, he is shown again from a picture taken when he visited the United States in 1924. Hs was at that time hailed by the entire population of the republic. He is almost as pspular in the United States as he is in Canada, and he has always been, in effect, as much a part of the union as he is of the empire. Special memorial services, in memory of the late King will be held at St. Matthew‘s Church on Sunday morning at 11 o‘clock, in common with other Anglican churches throughout the Emâ€" pire,. Morning prayer will be at ten o‘clock. The evening service, at seven, will also be of a commemorative nature., Memorial Services at St. Matthew‘s Church Toronto Mail and Empire:â€" The Democratic national convention will be held later in June than the Republican national convention, which will give the Republicans a chantce to steal any Democratic planks they may fancy, beâ€" fore the Deimocrats have a chance to build their platform.
