All garages must report accidents where the cars are brought to the garage and in no case must the car involved in a serious accident be taken away until the police arrive. In Timmins recently there has been frequent comment about the absence of any serious auto accidents in the town limits. This is undoubtedly due to the strict enforcement of the safety rules by the police here. The Timmins police has been unpopular, perhaps, on occasion for checking up on traffic, but their work in this line has borne wonâ€" derful results. There is no doubt but that the strictness of the police has avoided scores of accidents of serious type in town. There have been plenty of accidents in the district, however. It is only fair to add that the majority of the accidents in the district are due chiefly to the bad condition of the roauds. ‘The "back road" is in such condition that the wonder is that there are not more accidents. It may be added that provincial police are also working to enforce the safety rules with the idea of avoiding auto acciâ€" dents. There are new amendments to the â€"traffic laws that are being given special attention. These may be sumâ€" marized as follows:â€" : All cars now operating not considerâ€" ed safe by the provincial police are to be removed until put into good conâ€" dition. Where glass is broken in a car it must be replaced with safety glass. Connaught Centreâ€"Lillian Bass, Alâ€" bert Bertrand, Gladys L. Barnes Circus at Ball Park Toâ€"Day TIMMINS, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JULY 11TH, 1935 Noting the list of appointments to be | made by the Bennett Government as ipubllshed in the newspapers, W. O. Langdon, president of the Northern Ontario Associated Boards of Trade, this week recalled the fact that a numâ€" | ber of Senators were to be appointed : for Ontario and that there was a resoâ€" | lution passed some time ago by the Northern Ontario Associated Boards of Trade urging the appointment of at least one Senator to represent the North Land. Having hunted up the iresolution Mr. Langdon recalled some | of the discussion when the resolution | was before the Associated Boards. It ! was pointed out that though the North was a very important section of the l province and of special value to Canaâ€" da, there had never been a Senator for i this area, The nseeds of the North are ‘Apparent and the necessity for keeping i these needs before the public is equalâ€" ly evident. On the other hang the valâ€" |ue of the North to th people in genâ€" eral is so great as to make any effort ! on behalf of the North well worth ! while. After considering the question from all angles Mr. Langdon wrote to Hon. Mr. Bennett, enclosing the resolution previcously sent him and also outlining again the reasons why there should be a Senator from the North to keep Otâ€" tawa in the closest touch with the North, its needs and possibilities. Mr. Cope spoke briefly «on the Union Jack and the British Empire, having particular reference to the magnificient support shown throughout the Empire in the recent celebration of the King‘s Silver Jubilee. He remarked that if all the King‘s subjects were to pass before Buckingham palace at the rate Position on the platform, and poise are two other important features that require thought, practice and considerâ€" ation from those who appear on the public platform, Mr. Cope reminied them. The development of the voice so that it is clear, words well rounded out, and has a sufficient range to reach to all parts of the average hall is anâ€" other important feature. Vocabulary Important Although Shakespeare had perhaps the greatest vocabulary of any known man, the average man of toâ€"day has a normal vocabulary of 5,000 words, which, properly used and well distributâ€" ed throughout an address, is sulficient for most purposes, the speake: told them. f Be explicit in the outline of the subâ€" ject, the speaker advised, giving exâ€" amples of how some men insist on beâ€" ing vague. Definitions must be disâ€" tinct and pronounciation correct if one wishes to be a successful public speakâ€" er, he said. Where terms relating to an industry, hobby, professiorn or any undertaking must be used, those terms should be well reviewed by the speaker to be sure of their correctness, he advised. B. L. A despatch from Toronto on Tuesâ€" day of this week says: "Northern Onâ€" tario has shown a greater rate of inâ€" crease in accidents for the month of May, according to a bulletin issued toâ€" day by the Motor Vehicles Branch of the Ontario Department of Public Highways. No separate figures for Northern Ontario were made available. The number of accidents increased from 655 in May, 1934, to 828 in the same month of 1935, but there were fewer fatalities from accidents, accordâ€" ing to the report. The number of {aâ€" talities decreased from 44 in May of last year to 32 in May of the current year. Property damage loss was cestiâ€" mated at $75,705, an increase of 44 per cent. over the losses for the preceding vear." While there may be other fact the case, there is little aoubt but the bad condition of North Land is the chief contributing cause 0 increase in number of acciden roads in the North.
