In fact they are good for a lot of news vet. There was a peculiar situation in Sudbury last week when for several days it was not possible to secure a marriage license in that city. The town clerk, H. P. McKeown, who is the official issuer of marriage licenses, was taken ill suddenly and there was no One with authority to dish out the perâ€" mits to wed. Under such cireumâ€" stances it is surprising how many peoâ€" ple want to get married who were never married before. Few of them take kindly to the thought of waiting until a sick man recovers. It is interesting to conjecture whether or not a girl or a man will have a case against the city of Sudbury for damages or otherwise in case the party of the other part changes his or her mind about getting a license when licenses are available. In any event Sudbury was all excited about the idea that people were clamâ€" cring for marriage licenses and there were none such to be obtained. Evenâ€" tually a meeting of the council was called and a motion passed authorizâ€" ing Mrs. Morden Birbeck, for several years assistant to Mr. McKeown to issue the licenses. It is to be hoped that Britain is not its>lIf euchred into war trying to preserve the peace of the world. Cables from London, England, this morning, Trelayed from Toronto, say that Great Britain has been brought xto at least a temporary halt in its efforts to prevent Italy from waging war on Abyssinia. Both Italy and France are said to have rebuffed the British suggestions and efforts at comâ€" promise. Italy and Abyssinia appear to be determined to go on with the war and France and the United States are not apparently very determined to stop the war. The United States has not heeded the appeal from Abyssinia to give aid to that country and the U.S.A. has also refused to invoke the Briandâ€" Kellogg antiâ€"war treaty. Accordingly Great Britain is left without further ideas for the moment as a peaceâ€"makâ€" If you see a car driving along Third avenue one day this week with a blindâ€" folded driver in charge, qgon‘t teleâ€" phone the police. It Up to the present the new Stevens party has neither name nor headâ€" quarters, but it is stated in despatches from Ottawa that both name and headâ€" quarters will be announced this week. A general platform designed to enlist the support of all who believe that existing parties are unequal to the task of aiding the Dominion in recovering from the depression will be announced in a day or two. h A despatch this morning from Ottaâ€" wa gives the interesting information that at last Hon. H. H. Stevens has anâ€" noune‘g that he is starting a new poliâ€" tical party of his own. Hon. Mr. Stevens made the announcement to press repâ€" resentatives to this effect. He addsd that the new Stevens party hoped to have a candidate in every riding in the Dominion. Hon. H. H. Stevens, formerâ€" ly one of the Bennétt cabinst minisâ€" ters, and the originator of the Price Spreads commission, developed such a flair for regulating business and deâ€" nouncing economic conditions that he had difficulty with other members of the Bennett administration and evenâ€" tually resigned. Singe the resignation there has been constant talk of Hon. Mr. Stevens forming a new party but talk that Hon. Mr. Stevens might be chosen as the leader of the Conserâ€" vative party in case Hon, Mr. Bennett had to drop out /on zrccount of his health. In this connection many will see something of significance in the fact that Hon. Mr. Stevens did not anâ€" nounce his new party until after Hon. Mr. Bennett hagq definitely announced that he would die in harness rather than desert the party at this time. a harness maker by trade and had folâ€" lowed his vocation in Renfrew and Sturgeon Falls.
