The land bonus has worked well in Quebec. The Henry Government prom§sed to ‘inaugurate this land bonus but they waited too long before doing so, the recent election stopping any plans along this line. should be immediate attention given the matter by the Government. Any help, however, will only be itemporary. It seems more and more apparent that the only real permanent aid to settleâ€" ment must come from some form of bonus for landâ€"clearing. This would mean helping those who are helping themseives and showing probability of when they strike a run of illâ€"luck. Rev. Mr. Cochrane is not giving any sensational or alarmist picture and he knows what he is talking about. There ;taksn from relief in the South and so even if it cost something to keep them ,going on the new farms that was no _more costly and much more desirable than direct relief in the South. Unâ€" fortunately, this attitude had not been so apparent at first or the whole plan might have proved more successful. At that, it must be admitted that quite a measure Of success was achieved, Rev. Mr. Cochrane in his survey last winter said that the plan was working fairly well. The disorganizaticn and the uncertainty following announceâ€" ments by the present Government as to dropping the relief land settlement plan has undoubtedly added to the disâ€" couragement of the new settlers, It appears that the Hepburn Government has no intention of abandoning the new settlers already on the land in connecâ€" tion with ithe relief land settlement plan. What the Government has had in mind in regard to the matter has peen that no more groups Oof settlers are to be placed for the present under this scheme. It is difficult, however, for the settlers to realize this, especialy 1 when they strike a run of illâ€"luck. Some Settlers Live â€" on Bread and Lard the South or not. The attitude of the Henry Government before its Gefeat was that it would be good policy to do practically anything to keep the new settlers going. Better still, this increased production is expected to be more or less permanent. The machines will operate at capacity. It will mean an increase in employment for the men at Iroquois Falls where employment has been a problem, many employees of the paper mill being on part time and others off altogether. The /:ncreased number of machines in operation, ,however, means not only: employment for a number but it also means that the men employed will likeâ€" ly â€"go back to fullâ€"time employment. The usual thing for those working steadily in recent times has been a sixâ€" ' hour day. This was arranged so as to give the greatest poss‘ble number ofi men employment. Now it looks as if it will be possible and practical to go back to the old eightâ€"hour day with practiâ€" cally all at Iroquois Falls at work on full time. The people of the Falls who have been having a specially trying time now will be able to sing again:â€" "Happy days are here again." This week there is good news from Iroquois Falls. FPor the first time since Beptember, 1931, the Abitibi Power Paper Co. at the Falls expects to have seven machines running for some time and, perhaps, permanently. In the past three years the paper mill at the Falls has been under curtailed producâ€" tion. The number of machines in operation has varieq from time to time, but never has there been the full quota of machines running.
