THURSDAY, MARCH 167TH. 1933 _ _A wellâ€"known lawyer was always lecturing his office boy, whether he needed it or not. One day he chanced to hear the following conversation beâ€" tween the boy and the one employed mext door: . "How much does he the latter. "I get $2,000 a year," replied the lawâ€" yer‘s boy, "ten dollars a week in cash and the rest in legal advice." .4 *# ## * .O # N.Q * 00.0 # % ## * *# t*. *. * .*t, * .“.“.“‘“.N #* + # ##4 # *# #* ## # *# ## # * #4* # *# ## # # #* # # ## ## ## *# *# #4 # *# *# L *# *# ##* * * #* *# *# #e * *# # ## * “. eales? este«? At a regular meeting of the Caleâ€" donian Society of Timmins on Friday, March 9th, 1923, one of the special features was the presentation to Mr. Jas. Geils, leader of the Caledonian choir of an adjustable music stand and a handsome ebony baton, silver mountâ€" ed. On the baton were engraved the words:â€"*"Presented to Mr. James Geils by the Caledonian Society of Timmins 1923." In making the presentation on behalf of the Caledonian Society, the president, G. A. Macdonald, briefly reâ€" ferred to the very generous and effiâ€" cient services given to the choir by Mr. Geils, ahd the large measure of success that had attended the choir, largely through the unfailing effort and outâ€" standing gwhility of the leader, Mr. Geils. The presentation was made as slight evidence of the esteem of the society. Mr. Geils made suitable reply. After the presentation there was a proâ€" gramme of unusual interest and much originality. Mrs. M. B. Scott read a very clever humorous paper on "Who Killed Cock Robin." There was anâ€" other witty paper on the same topic by Myrs. J. K. Moore. W. M. Whyte‘s paâ€" per on "The Deil" was another extra special that was greatly appreciated. M. B. Scott made a big hit with a happy impromptu address, The president dealt with the subject, "Cuttie Sarks," viewed philosophically, metaphorically and diplomatically. Well rendered solos by J. K. Moore, A. J. Downie, Jas. Geils, and others were much appreciatâ€" ed. In addition there was the instruâ€" mental music by F. Wolno and W. H. Wilson. Dancing was another pleasure of the evening, the "Dusty Miller" and quadrilles being especially popular with those present. Refreshments were served as usual during the evening and the meeting was generally voted as one Of the most enjoyable and one of the est attended of the season. Whenever there is any form of direct relief there seems to be difficulties of various kinds. Ten years ago in conâ€" nection with the administration of fire relief there was a case reported where a man was accused of stealing a carâ€" load of relief goods. It developed thai the goods were unsuitable and he had sold them intending to turn the cheque over to the Red Cross. Before the cheque was turned over a charge was laid against him. As to the unsuitâ€" ability of some of the goods shipped North as relief goods, The Advance said:â€""There can be no question as to the generosity of the people of Ontarto. The volume of contributions of goods and cash for fire relief purposes in the North Land stamps the pesple as genâ€" erous all right. All who showed generâ€" csity, however, did not show equal good judzment. About ten freight cars, it ‘s said, would be necessary to hold the "freak"* sort of contributions of ~clothâ€" ing donated. These "freak" donaticns no doubt given in good faith, include such articles as tuxedo coats, crepe «: chine night dresses, silk hats, patent leather dancing shoes, ball gowns, fancy dress trousers for men, etc., etc., and then a whole lot more et ceteras and so on. A recent announcement made is to the effect that practically none of this stuff is being allowed to go unusâ€" ed. It is said some 290 sewing maâ€" chines have been bought by the relief committee and the fancy wear for men and women,â€"in its present shape abâ€" solutely useless for fire sufferersâ€"will be remade into useful articles of clothâ€" ing for children. By this method pracâ€" tically everything can be made over. Perhaps the Fire Relisf Committee can design a trimming for silk hats and so start a new fashion in women‘s Easter M The following Advance of f special inter Freneral use now LLY There was a special wire to Timmins a years ago to secure a report of the nior game between Iroquois Falls and tchener.
