+i un is t bhabits of industry have hitherto _ “ t "The true significance of direct reâ€" lief is shown by a recent happening here in Cochrane. A man came from the Amos district in Quebec, seeking a farm, and when asked why he wanted a farm here, seeing that he already had a good one near Amos, his reply was found. It is in the undermining of the country‘s manhcod and womanhood, the demoralizing effect of getting something for nothing that the true viciousness of this accursed practice is making itself felt. Instead of decreasâ€" ing, the expenditures on direct relief are steadily mounting, and from all indications will continue to mount. "It is passing strange that we find in the country today so miany leaders who are expressing grave concern over any suggestion regarding the debasing ¢f our currency, who are yet apriparently quite unconcerned over.the vicious deâ€" basing of our people thr:ugh the meâ€" dium of gdirect relief. It is not in the actual dollars and cents loss to the gountry, heavy as that is, that the worst features of direct relief are to be 4 difficult problem is undoubtedly due to the fact that the strictest posâ€" sible adherence has been made to the diea of employment as a relief measure, than direct relief. Had direct relief been featured here as in some other places the result wou‘ld have been deplorable. It will be a matter for regret, indeed, if the time comes when the attitude of the governments forces the town to adcpt any largs measure Of direct relief. of the evils of direct reâ€" Hef will be gathered from the suggesâ€" tions in the following editorial in The Cochrane Northland Post last week:â€" Ventilation System with Fisher "NOâ€"DRAFT" of full return of prosperity to Canada. ‘The editorial is as follows:â€" "The padlocking of bank accounts and pocket books by those people who really have no occasion to do so, parâ€" ticularly at this time of year, is indeâ€" ble, although many persons are doing fensible, although many persons are doing it and using the economic crisis as an excuse. Others who are able to spend freely, and have the inclination to do so, but do not because they are afraid of the criticism of their neighbours are also unwise. One of the best ways of helping to create more employment is, as has been rerisatedly pointed out in the newspapers, by the spending of all that can be spent by those who have surplus funds and can well afford to do so without imperilling their own finâ€" ancial standing. The present tima is one which gives everyone an opportuniâ€" ty to spend more freely than at any other time of the year, and present conâ€" ditions do not afford an excuse for a curtailment of expenses, but very good reason for a loosening of the purseâ€"strings." Logic, commonsense and good patriâ€" otism are in the suggestion of the ediâ€" torial in The Perth Expositor last week in reference to the duty of those who are able to spend to do so in these days when so many are not able to pay out dollars even for the necessities of life. Every dollar spent helpris someone else to live and prosper and so does its part not only to prevent conditions from becoming worse but also to hasten the A Duty to Spend These Days if You Have Money *# For moenths, Chevrolet and General Motors asked automoâ€" bile ownersâ€""What do you want in your next car?" However when it came to being deported they exhibited a strong reluctance to going and fought every step of the way against being sent back to the countriese from whence they came. Possibly the one lesson that had been taught by this amazing deflance of our laws is the need of more drastic means in the way of reguâ€" lating those who would overturn our system of government by force. ‘The constitutional method is the method of change in this country and must remain so. Anyone who differs with that had better move to those counâ€" tries where other systems more in line with their ideas hold sway." .
