12 this connection it is interessting to note what is accomplished in other towns of the North. Last week The New Liskeard Speaker had a very inâ€" teresting article headed, "Northern Ontario Midâ€"Summer Flowers." This artivle read in purt as follows:â€" ‘We of Northern Ontario are at the present time in the enjoyment of the signt of the beautiful dahlia in cur egardiens, for this might be called dahlia we«k. although their time limit is much longer than that of the other popular fiowrr, the peony, which blooms earlier in the season. We remember when cne rarely saw any but red dahlias, but in ; New Liskeard today, there are dahha.st which are as white as snow, cthers' nearly black, and still others of every imaginable shade of colour. Amongst the whites Mr. Kosmack has some beauties, and very large, but Messrs Cols and Byam have the largest hbave seen. Both have dahlias which | measure fully eight inches in diameter,| and of variegated colour. However.f there are those who still favour the brilliant red, although all dahliss are ; nice no matter what the colour. l "We were sorry to learn that Mr. Byram‘s gladioli are going wrong this year. For a number of years back, Mr. Byam has been the leader in the growth of vladioli, and every year he has kind-‘ ly given away hundreds of blooms, but this yvear some blight seems to havel struck his plot of glads, and he does mnoa expect to have as good a crop As has some advantage over Timmins. However, it must be admitted that Timmins has done unusually well in the way of lawns gardens. The Advance believes that much of what has been accomplished has been due to the effort and the inspiration of the Tiomins Horticultural Sccoiety and the publicâ€"spirited and beautyâ€"loving inâ€" dividuals who gave the Horticultural such generous and prrsistent It is interesting to ncte the variety a:rxi the excellence of many of the fowers grown in Timmins. In this town there have been some cf the finest pansies grown that could be exâ€" hibited anywhere. Dahlias, asters, nasâ€" turtiums, sweet peas, zinnias, gladioli, are some of the other species havirg notable representation at the Ho:rticuls ures} shows here in past years. "Mrs. Taylor, Lake Shore, has two large plots of gladioli, one of which is slightly touched with disease, while the other, which is in fresh ground, seems to te about as healthly a lot of fowers as can be imagined. Indeed, both plots form a very pwretty sight, and are well worth going to see. Xorthern Ontario Midsummer Flowers â€"â€"uring the present summer,, as in mast years, The Advance has made reâ€" ference to the number of beautiful lawns and gardens in town. The numâ€" er of these gardens and lawns i really remarkable when the youth of the town is recalled, and also when it is rememhbered that the town is estabâ€" lien«d on a sand area. For years past there have been notable flower gardens on "the Hill" like that of Rev. Mr. Cushing, while F.°C. H. Simms and otwrs in the lower section of the town have been equally noteworthy for the fine gardens maintained. In more reâ€" cent years, however, there have been so many lawns and gardens of superior kind that the general impression of home surroundings has been more than individual casesâ€"of extra fine gardens On "the Hill," in the "*w«nsite", on Maple and Elm streets, on Sixth avenue, and on other streets and avenues there are so many beautiâ€" ful gardens that the pioneer efforts dao not stand out as much as they did wome years ago. ?+ may be frankly admitted that in the matter of gardens and lawns, Timâ€" mins has not the same chance as Iroâ€" quois Falls and Kapuskasing, where corporations concerned in the comâ€" munities have srent s» much money arvi done so much to beau'tify the surâ€" roundings of homes. In Iroquois Falls the Abitibi Power Paper Co. was farâ€"sighted as well as generous in its extenditures for the beautifying of the town. The same is true of the Spruce Falls Power Paper Co. and the town of Xapuskasing. Old established towns ike Haileybury and New Liskeard also form a very pretty sight, and are well worth going to see, "It might be that Mr. Byam has not given sufficient attention to the matter of following the BS.A.‘s advice re the rotation of crops. However, we may rest assured that he will not rest conâ€" tent until he has solved the problem, arxl until he again takes his place as our local "Gladioli King.". "But we were as deepty interested in town vegetable gardens as in the flowâ€" er gardens, and we are glad to be able to say that there never were better prospects for splendid root and vegeâ€" table crops in town than this year, alâ€" though we have to say that Liskeard has never failed to have good garden crops. Our soil is the best poassible, and we have gardeners who know what to do to obtain the best results from their work. We hope every one has, decided to put garden products on exhibition at the fall fair Do not le; the small matter of being a prize winner affect you. Just put your products on exhibiâ€" ‘ tion to let the people know that you have done your npart toward growingl something for some one. The more we grow the more there will be for the people, and after all, food products are really of more value than are t.;e beauâ€" tifu)l fowers."
