W a rants. They were picked up as suspiâ€" cious characters as they sat talking toâ€" gether in the city park. After spendâ€" ing the night in jail they were ordered out of town by Detective Inspector A. Pexd€erson. The suspects were not, polâ€" ice hastened to explain, the famous men whose names they ‘bore. They were transients, looking for a job. Toronto Globe, July 7. The Tribune then appends its myâ€" siery comment as follows:â€""In referâ€" ence to the foregoing, The Northern Tribune has received a private letter fmmm prominent person giving facts ofi a sensational nature concerning the letter and the activities of John Aird, Jr., which place quite a different comâ€" plexion upnon his alleged relations with Mr. J. H. Black. But we are specifiâ€" cally asked not to use the letter, and ties our hands for the time being. Penrding the time when we may disâ€" cuss ‘the matter more fully, we can only reiterate our statement of last week that we did not wish to do an injustice to Mr. Black. Justice Orde‘s report should soon be issued, with his comâ€" ments upon the Madawaska power deal. It remains to be seen what credence is <cherein placed on Aird‘s strange testiâ€" mony. Mr. Black may be absolved from unjust aspersions, as our inforâ€" mation would indicate. Our corresâ€" request has prevented us from at present making certain comâ€" ments either favourarble or unfavourâ€" avle; we are asked only to be fair, and we want to be fair." ies P es taatestnets atee ts in atec*ve® cirnment:â€" "The Gliobe has received a comâ€" munication from Mr. J. Mr. Elack points out that he never had, crectly or indirectly, any connection with the sale of the Madawaska power pant to the Hydroâ€"Electric Commisâ€" sx«m, nor did he know of the negotiaâ€" ns until he saw the announcement oi the purchase in the press. Mr. Black adds that he had no part in any way with the Abitibi contract with the Hydro, it being negotiated by Abitibi offcers and technical men without any helr from him. The Globe is glad to pblish the clearâ€"cut statement of Mr. Black, and sincerely regrets any injusâ€" twe unwittingly done him in quoting from our Northern contempcrary."‘â€" Mysterious Comment on a Mysterious Letter in its issue of last week The Northâ€" 1 Tribune, of Kapuskasing, has a aaner mysterious comment on a myâ€" ‘erious newspaper from mysterious urce. The special train leaving Toronto on Wednesday evening, July 13th, pickee up the guests along the line as well as at Toronto. Leaving North Bay on Thursday morning the special was in two sections, the first starting at 7.30 am. and the second twenty minutes later. At each station on the trip north the list of guests on the train was augmented as the train praoceeded orth to its ultimate destination, Mcoâ€" sonee. The first section of the train Invited Guests at Moosonee on Friday i In making up theâ€"list of those invitâ€" ed to take part in the trip to Moosonee last week for the ceremony of the forâ€" mal opening of Moosonee, the new townsite of the North, and the obseryvâ€" ance of the completion of the extension of the Temiskaming and Northorn Onâ€" tario Reilway to James Bay, Gec. W. Lee and his fellow commissioners must have had a very difficult task, both as to whom to invite and whom to leave off the list. An easy way, perhas, so far as the representations of the North Land were concerned, would have been to have invited the mayors and reeves of the different municipalities, and let it go at that. This, howover, would have been less than the commission aimed at for the event. Instead, the commission appeared to centre more upon those active in board of trade matters and in this way included so far as humanly possible those who had urged the extension to the Bay and had been interested for years in the general welfare of the North. The result of the plan of selection in any event was that all parts of the North were duly repreâ€" sented and if at times the gathering appeared something like a meeting of the Northern Ontario Associated Boards of Trade that made the guest list apâ€" pear all the more appropriate for the cccasion. Unfortunately, all invited were not able to be present, but this was something that could not be avoidâ€" ed under any plan. It is a fact that all on the trip are agreed that it was a remarkably pleasant and friendly occasion and this fact is another proof of the good judgment shown in selectâ€" ing the guests for the occasion. aPeetantentants thing was emphacically illustratel by an accident at Hearst. During the proâ€" gress of a baseball game at Hearst last week a player missed a strike and his bat flew out his hands and went in among some spectators close to the home plate. In this case no less than four peorle were hurt, some of them |seriously and all painfully. Hector Tremblay received a solar plexus blow that knocked him unconscious for several minutes. A little lad named |Jack Crawford had his nose broken. Two others in the crowd had their ribs hurt and their bodies somewhat bruisâ€" ed. The unusual incident should furâ€" ther impress upon all the need for keeping a safe distance from the batâ€" ter and the catcher. In addition there were many other invited guests who were unable to take in the trip to Moosonee, including:â€"â€" A. F. Kenning, M.P.P., Timmins; Hon. R. B. Bennett and other members of the Ottawa Cabinet; all the other memâ€" bers of the Ontario Cabinet not presâ€" ent on the trip; Sir Henry ThorntOon of the C.N.R. and E. W. Beatty of the CP.R., and various other raillway offiâ€" cers; Premiér of Quebec and other Quebec public men; Hon. G. Howare Ferguson, High Commissioner; W. E. N. Sinclair, Liberal Party leader in Ontario; Mitchell Hepburn, M.P., St. Thomas; Major Herridge, Canadian Envoy at Washington; Col. McNider, U.S. Envoy to Canada; N. A. Timmins, Montreal; J. P. Bickell, McIntyre Mines; R. J. Ennis, McIntyre Mines; Sir Robt. Falconer, Toronto; W. C. Noxon, Agentâ€"General for Canada in London, England; Senator M. J. O‘Brien Ottawa; Sir Joserth Flavelle, Toronto; Hon. Jas. Lyons, Sault Ste. Marie; and many others. Often ‘at baseball matches members of the crowd of spectators are urged to keep back from the area behind the catcher, but it is difficult to get them to do this sometimes. Those connectâ€" ed with baseball know that there is always danger just behind the bat, danger from a swift ball and from a thrown bat. Baseball managers would be happier if they could make the crowds see this, but often the fans get so excited that they crowd up behind the batter and the catcher, sometimes even interferring with the work of the catcher. In Timmins this difficulty was overcome by putting up netting behind the batting area and insisting that all but the teams, officials, etc., keep off the field. Even under this plan youngsters and others still persist occasionally in spoiling the catcher‘s chances, obstructing the view of the spectEtors and plavsing themselves in danger by getting in the batter‘s area.
