A break in the pipe of the wator system between the town and the Shaw Springs on this (Monday) afternoon caused the cessation of the water supâ€" ply on one of the hottest afternoons we have had. We always know the water supplied here was good but it never seemed so desirable as this afternoon. "You never miss the water till the well runs dry," was certainly emphasized all over town. The fire alarm was sounded on Sunday just a little before one o‘clock. Mr. E. Jones had seen smoke issuing from the vestry of St. Joachim‘s Roman Catholic Church and gave the alarm. In less than two minutes South Porâ€" cupine fire department were on the scene and ready to work. It happened just at a time when Engineer Armâ€" strong was down at the pumps and no time was lost before the water was on the fire which was all in the vestry end of the church. The main bxiy of the church is not damaged much otherwise but the vestry is badly gutted and the vestments of the church are ruined. On Monday M. Smith, S8r., secretary of the fire department receivâ€" ad the following letter from Father Gelinas with a cheque for twentyâ€"five dollars enclosed as a material proof of his appreciation of their efforts. Needâ€" less to say this letter was very much appreciated by the firemen. It read:â€" ‘Acknowledging the wonderful work of the firemen of South Porcupine, I wish to exprress to them my most profound gratitude in their full denial to the peak of life sacrifice to save all they could from the destructive element of fire on the 28th instant in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joachim o South Porcupine.
