He addressed the gathering briefly at morning session, having to return to his home because of his wife‘s illMess. "The conference was a marked disapâ€" pointment in more ways than one. The secretary was absent from town, and his records were not available. No finâ€" ancial statement of the association‘s affairs was presented, thoughâ€"a docuâ€" ment would discloss some interesting features. No agenda of business had been prepared, and throughout the sesâ€" sicns discussion rambled more or less aimlessly over ground which had been covered at previous gatherings of the N.QS.A., with no new material brought cut. No fresh intimation was given of government policy in relation to setâ€" tlers‘ affairs, though "progress" was For fourteen years past the Timmins Fire Department‘s annual ball has beon one of the big events of the season, and it is confidently expected to make the fifteenth annual dance as big a success as many of its fourteen predscessors. The annual ball of the fire brigade this year is anncunced to be held in the Masonic hall on Friday evening of next week, May 22nd. Tickets are now being so‘ld for the occasion by Capt. Manson Smith and other members of brigade. The fire department boys feel that they are much handicapmd this year by the fact that Chief Borland is laid upâ€"with an injured arm. The chief has always been the moving spirit in assurâ€" ing the great success of the annual ball, and the boys miss him very much at present. However, they feel they simâ€" ply have to redouble their own efforts and look to the public for special coâ€" operation and support on this occasion. They are working specially hard to make the annual ball a big success and to this end hope to have the same asâ€" sistance and friendship that has alâ€" ways been given the fire department here in every way. Dancing on May 22nd will be from 9.30. Refreshments will be served during the evening. Again, it may be noted that tickets may be secured from Capt. Manson Smith or from any member of the "briâ€" gade. it with speci special note should event and the dates ing, Thu are the the Unit: ley â€"Mai the church tive one a) Annual Ball of the Fire Department on May 22nd Meeting of Settlers Was Disappointing THREEâ€"ACT PLAY TO BE GIVEN THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY Attecndance Smali and Only One Speâ€" cial Speaker Present. This stretch of country has no roads at »resent for the east and west trip. Gus McManus, however, has bseen able to negctiate the greater part cof the onerâ€" us duty. Soon Gus McManus will be through the strip lacking roads and the rest of the way will present no difficulâ€" ty, there being pretty good roads all the way. Wwhile the Gus McManus party has the most difficult part of the Transâ€" Canada trip duly negotiated, the party led by E. Wharton Shaw has only covâ€" ered the first part of the easiest secâ€" tion of the journey. However, it must be expected that he selected a much setter time of the year to start the trip than did the Needham party for whom Mr. McManus is carrying on. Even at that, however, Mr. Shaw will have more or less difficulty getting along. He can report progress,‘ though. Here is one jespatch telling of some progress made.
