Of course, that will only be fiftyâ€"four "The possibility of a third great sysâ€" tem of railways across Canada lies some distance in the future. In the meanâ€" time steel fingers are tentatively gropâ€" ing northward, toward the latitude known only to explorers a generation ago. "In the west the two great transconâ€" tinental systems have united in taking over the provinciallyâ€"owned roads, forâ€" merly known as the Peace River and the Alberta and Great Waterway lines, pushing north to contact with the southern reaches of the Peace River. An outlet for this road to the Pacific coast is mooted. Surveys of possible routes through the Rockies were made some years ago. Already there is conâ€" siderable farming settlement on the Peace. _ "‘The Canadian Pacific Railway has a charter through one of its subsidaries for the passage of a line from Ville Marie to the shores of James Bay. This line now runs as far as Quinze dam on the Ottawa River, under the name of Interprovincial and James Bay Railway | where there were some old papers | The result was a fire that alarmed the gchildren in the house. The youngsters trled to take the baby with them but were not able to get if from the high ;chair before they were forced to fiee before the flames and smoke. The fire |made astonishing headway. The moâ€" ther had left the house for a few minâ€" utes on an errand. There was no fire in the house and everything scemec !sa.fe cnough. One youngster was six years old and another four and the mother no doubt thought they would be all right until she returned and that no harm was likely to come to the babv in its high chair. The story ot the tragedy that resulted is told in the following Gdespatch from Ansonville lact week:â€" "The reported projection of a line from Lake Athabaska east to Churchill lacks appeal at this time. The terriâ€" tory through which such a road would pass in entirely undeveloped, and its known resources do not bulk to proâ€" portions demanding rail transportaâ€" tion. "Lead and zinc on Athabaska and Great Slave, copper on Great Bear, oil at Fort Norman, tar sands, coal, the threat of gold on the easterly flowing rivers and creeks are added to the lure of rich valleys of farming and grazing lands. Fur harvesting and fishing have thus far been the only magnets, attracâ€" ting a limited number of frontiermen. Farming and mining may draw the population which will mes n the freight tonnage interesting to new railway construction. "In the east the T. N. O. Railway is headed for Moose Factory, on James Bay, and will reach it in 1931. In cenâ€" tral Canada the Hudson Bay Railway is an accomplished undertaking, requiring only the finishing touches. "Waterways, jumping off place for the fertile valleys on the eastern side of the Rockies, appears to be the logiâ€" cal starting point for the western inâ€" vasion of the North. A line following the Athabaska river of Chipewyan, or around the western end of the lake to cross the mouth of the famous Peace, projected north to the western shores of Great Slave Lake, would tap the Mackenzie river. Ultimately such a railway might reach Great Bear, the fourth largest body of wat‘er in America ‘"Mineral deposits in the area are numerous. "Roger, the twentyâ€"threeâ€"monthsâ€"old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Tremblay, Hosâ€" pital street, Ansonville Ont., was burnâ€" ed to death, and two older children, Joseph, aged 6, and Emard, aged 4, narrowly escaped a similar fate when their home was destroyed by fire whch broke out about 6.30 on Thursday evenâ€" ing. Mr. Tremblay, sn employee of the Abitibi Power and Paper Company, was working at the time, and Mrs. Tremâ€" blay was in Iroquois Falls on business, the children being alone in the house., In an editorial article last week The Northern Miner says:â€" ‘"The New North is going through thse phases which ultimately mean railways, seitlement and development. The hisâ€" torical cycle of fur trading, prospecting, mining and homesteading is working. Power and pulp are added attractions in the eastern sector. Metal mines and farming lands draw the western lines northward. ‘"The house, a two storey frame building owned by J. C. Eades, of Iroâ€" qucis Falls, is a complete loss, as are the contents, which were valued at several hundred dollars and uninsured." North Offers Big Field for Railway Expansion chair ons of his feet was caught and when the baby‘s clothes caught fire and the chair fell over, they had to leave it. ‘"The interior of the house was comâ€" pletely in flames when the alarm was turned in, and they broke out with such suddenness that neighboutrs workâ€" ing in their gardens along the street were unaware of the fire unt!l they heard the siren. ‘"Mrs. Tremblay had been houseâ€" cleaning during the afternoon, and had gathered a bunch of papers which she put in a box bshind the stove in which there was no fire. It is believed that che of the children dropped lighteq match into ths box.
