Elsewhere in this issue will be found reference to the big hit made by the Timmins Miners‘ Quartette, Messtrs Snow, Street, Jago and Johns, in their appearance last week at the Royal York hotel, Toronto, where they sang in connection with events under the auspices of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The quartette of course made the biggest part of their hit by virtue of the fact that they had unusually good voices and were talentâ€" ed singers. Much interest, however, was created through their miners‘ dress, the rubber clothes with realistic splashes of mud attracting special atâ€" tention. As noted elsswhere on each occasion as they entered hall or room they came singing. The song written by W. Stan Johns, one of the quartette, is sung to the tune of "Clementine," and is as follows:â€" We are miners, Porcupiners. Every morning we‘re on time. In the shaftâ€"house you will find us With our tools right in the line. Cobalt, South Lorrain, Gowganda, Elk Lake, Kirkland are all in line, But for real mines and miners You‘ve got to go to Porcupine. Then we worked both hard and steady, And we saved up quite a sum, But we bought some stock on margin, And the brokers put us on the bum. "How‘s she going?" says the captain As he come through on his beat, A very odd type of burglary is reâ€" ported from North Bay where a man was said to have made a daring entry into Queen Victoria Memorial hospital through a window in the night nurses‘ quarters on Thursday evening last. The motive is thought to have been robbery, the burglar making a getâ€" away by jumping out of the window after the nightwatchman had pulled the ladder away. The burglar jumped some eighteen feet to the ground and a struggle with the nightwatchman folâ€" lowed. It was of brief duration, howâ€" ever, the burglar tripping up his wouldâ€" be capturer and taking to kis heels. The janitor, while making a last round of the grounds for the evening, noticed the ladder against the rear wall of the building. He noticed also pair of man‘s legs just vanishing over the winâ€" dow sill. He hurriedly pulled the ladâ€" der away and called to the nurses that there was a man in their quarters. The burglar took alarm at the outcry and jumped from the window. <The ianitor grappled with him but failed to hold him. The janitor was equally unable to catch the intruder, though chasing him for a block or two. The jdnitor returned to the hospital when he saw he could not overtake the burâ€" glar, and described to the police the burglary and the burglar so far as desâ€" cription could be given of the occurâ€" rence amid so much hurry and exciteâ€" ment. The police have been working on the case but so far have been unâ€" able to locate the burglar. "Drill the holes with plenty on them, And make sure they‘re all ten feet. Builder‘s Supplies , Ont. = sn . ds i 9 t is A t "C tb ‘c The farm home of Robert Jarvis, a prominent farmer of Kearns townâ€" ship, near Uno Park, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening of last week. The origin of the fire has not been deâ€" finitely decided upon. The blaze is unâ€" derstood to have first broken out in an upstairs room where a lighted lamp was in use and where some children were playing. Whether the lamp was overturned or whether it accidentally ignited curtains or hangings has not been definitely ascertained. The fire was believed to have been gotten under control â€"when it broke out afresh to finish off the building. Lack of waâ€" ter made the fight a hopeless one after the first round, although the flames were fought stubbornly for almost three hours. Most of the downstairs furniâ€" ture was saved but the upstairs furniâ€" ture is a complete loss. The teacher of a nearby school, boarding at the Jarvis home, lost all his belongings, exâ€" cepting a fur coat in his upstairs apartâ€" ment. A small amount of insurance was carried on the building with nothing on the contents. The blaze was quite a spectacular one being visible for miles around and a very large crowd gathered. WINDSOR, ONTARIO THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO NATIONAL MOTOR SALES _(From The Huntingdon Gleaner) _‘ While statesmen in Germany are tryâ€" ing to find a way to reduce taxes, taxâ€" payers are laughing over a cabaret turn which has become one of the big jokes of the moment. In it a strong man twists up a poker and reduces a chair to kindling. He then produces a leâ€" mon, squeezes it, and offers a sum of money to anyone who can get anâ€" other drop of moisture out of it. No one can do so until a little man comes forward. He does not look at all musâ€" cular, but he squeezes out three more drops. Then, in response to the strong man‘s request to know how he did it, he replies: "it is very simple, I am an incomeâ€"tax collector." Translated, it means, literally, "beautiâ€" ful can do orchid." Pontiac‘s Chinese name, "pagoda can do‘" alludes to paâ€" goda as a place and "can do‘" as perâ€" formance and ability. Chevrolet as a name has been established so long in China that no change was mads, It is pronounced "Cheevoret" and means "snow buddha orchid," symbol:© for purity and endurance. Cadillac has a close phonetic alluâ€" sion to the original name and the broad translation in Chinese means "a car for the wealthy, with great beauty, power and performance." LaSalle and Oldsmobile, for phonetic reasons, were not changed. Buick is one of the most esteemed cars in China. Therefore, the name "piâ€"ku" was chosen. It means in Engâ€" lish "other especially can do." In some provinces it translates into "exâ€" ceptional performance." One of the most interesting developâ€" ments that has come to light in autoâ€" mobile merchandising and has been a naming of products in China where the native buys by trademark or "chop." A "chop" having been established, is rarely changed. The language symbols and ideographs have a different meaning «in different proâ€" vinces, so it was necessary for repreâ€" sentatives in China to adopt standard pronocunceable names for the various lines.
