McElhenney, the sperintendent, thae party inspected the variouns departments where the cperations in progress were explained by the divisional officers. Practical demonstrations were given in timber mechanics, one of the chief attractions being the timberâ€"testing machine which is the only one of its kind in Canada. Another wonderful contriâ€" vance seen in action was the hazard tester, a huge revolving drum which determines the amount of resistance crates and boxes of different sorts and sizes exert against careless and reckâ€" less handling. Standard specimens of forest products, such as cellulose deâ€" rivatives, resin and oil were exhibited and fully described; the processes of woodâ€"preserving by creosoting ties and timber, together with the financial and structural advantages of the various processes were explained in detail; and an examination was made of the timâ€" ber pathology display. The tour conâ€" cluded with an interesting series of slides on timber physics. The main laboratories in Ottawa inâ€" clude in their work the mechanical testing of timbers, the utilization of wood waste, the study of wood decay, wcood structure, the measurement of fibre lengths, the adhesive strength of wood glues, the holding power of nails and screws, the design of wooden conâ€" tainers, the preservative treatment of weods, the relative properties of differâ€" ent preservatives, the seasoning of vwood either naturally or in dry kilns, the distillation of hardwoods, and many other related problems. Members of the Ottawa Branch of the Canadian Engineering Institute Dept. of Interior‘s Main Laboratories. On the occasion of a recent monthly mecting, the members of the Ottawa b:ranch of the Engingering Institute of Canada to the number of about 110 visited the main laboratories in Ottawa of the Forest Products Laboratories, Department of the Interior, and spent several hours viewing the modern equipment and studying the methods of work of that institution. Customs office collections at the port of Sudbury for the year ending March 31st, 1929, totalled $419,475.77. It may be stated that in addition to the main laboratories at Ottawa, there are branches in Vancouver and Montâ€" real. The Vancouver branch deals with Pacific Coast woods, and the Pulp and Paper Division in Montreal is devoted to scientific research in that field. The Montreal laboratory, the work of which is carried on coâ€"operatively by the Deâ€" partment of the Interior, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, and Mcâ€" Gill University, is housed in the new Pulp and Paper building recently opened by His Excellency the Governor General. we essed eng 4y The following story now "going the rounds of the press" was written for The Mining Review. The fire in question came in for conâ€" siderable discussion at the Cobalt council, and it was specially stressed that no one but the fire chief or mayor had the right to call in outside briâ€" gades. The growth in demand for hydro service in the Corâ€" poration‘s fleld of operations is evidâ€" enced by a further addition of almost $3,000,000 to plant account and also by an increase of over 10 per cent in net earnings over the preceding year. Durâ€" ing 1928 construction of the two new units to the Quinze plant was comâ€" pleted, adding 27,000 K.V.A. to the capacity of this power house, and bringâ€" ing the ultimate capacity up to 67,000 h.p. Th2 balance sheet reflects heavy plant account being up at $31,179,728 from $28,360,534; preferred and common stock outstanding both being higher; and the excess of current liabilities over current assets revealed in the 1927 balâ€" ance sheet being accentuated. There is an item of $1,090,504 for notes payable which did not appear on the preceding balance sheet. GANADA NORTHERN POWER HAS YFAR OF PROGRESS The income account shows gross earnings of $3,088,529 up from $2,812,â€" 514 and with only a moderate increase in operating expenses, net is up at $2,198,737 from $1,961,701; deduction of interest and bad debts leaves $1,410,â€" 218 available for depreciation and diviâ€" dends, and after this profit and loss surplus is shown up at $1,190,460 from $498,994. Income account for the past three years compares as follows:â€" Continued Growth in Demand for Serâ€" vice Indicated by Wide Plant Expansion and Increase in Gross and Net Earnings In submitting the report to shareâ€" holders, president A. J. Nesbitt says in part:â€" "It is necessary and proper to bring to the attention of the shareholders the increasing burden of taxation to which your Compiny must submit. Practiâ€" cally 10 per cent of the revenue colâ€" lected from your customers is returned to the public trough the various Govâ€" ernmental authorities, and while all connected with this Companyâ€"our cusâ€" tomers, shareholders and othersâ€" should willingly pay their share of the cost of administration of the country, nevertheless the large amounts returnâ€" éd to the Governments are a heavy burden on your Company and must be collected from our customers for the service supplied. "The attention or our shareholders is directed to the very low rates which your company receives for the service supplied, and which is without doubt an important factor in assisting in the upbuilding, growth and prosperity of the great mining industry which yo'ur Company serves. It is to be noted that the gross electric revenue is less than cightyâ€"five one hundredths of a cent (.85¢c) per kilowatt hour, which after taxes is reduced to about threeâ€"quarâ€" ters of a cent (.175¢.) per kilowatt hour. This figure compares more than favourâ€" ably with the revenue received from any similar undertaking on the continent. and it should be a source of pride to all our shareholders to know that your Company is thus able to do its part towards the development of the terriâ€" tory served. From time to time cur rates are criticised, but the criticism is not substantiated by the facts, and it is with pleasure that the facts are drawn to the attention of our shareholders, that they may be in a position to reâ€" fute unfair and unjust criticism."
