The weekly luncheon and meeting of the Kiwanis Cllub on Monday at the hotel, Timmins, proved of more than usual interest. President C. G. Announcement was made regarding the Kiwanis District Convention to be held at Kingston on Sept.,24th and 25th. For this event the Steamer Kingston has been chartered to run from Toronto to Kingston and return. The fare from Toronto and return, Inâ€" cluding meals on the boat both ways and cabin accommodation while in Kingston, is only $25.00. That means that delegates will only have to pay for meals in Kingston during the conâ€" vention, in addition to the small charge fon the fine trip from Toronte to Kingston and return. The trip apâ€" pears to be a most attractive one and the convention itself should prove of great interest and benefit. _ J. E. Newton was elected viceâ€"preâ€" sident of the Timmins club to succeed W. S. Jamieson, resigned. The only visiters for the day was Mr Armstrong, introduced by "Chip" Ball Among the several very interesting matters discussed at the meeting was the proposal made by Messrs W. D. Langdon and P. Dougall that a big community Hallowe‘en event be put on here for the youngsters. The suggesâ€" tions included the idea of a bonfire at some safe place, fireworks, comâ€" munity singing, etc., etc. Mr. W. D. Cuthbertson was the speaker for the day and his address on "Quality Membership‘ was very interâ€" esting as well as being helpful and inâ€" spiring. He referred to the excellent | addresses heard by the Kiwanis in the past year including talks on minerâ€" alogy, physiology, zoology, psychology, "boyology," and other "ologies," and suggested that his remarks would be. on ‘"menology," qualified under the heading of "Quality Membership." The average business man takes at least an annual inventory to see his standing, and Mr. Cuthbertson thought that service clubs might also do well to stop at least once a year to study and consider what is being accomplishâ€" ed. "As an organization in a comparâ€" atively new town, made up of numerâ€" ous nationalities. each with their own customs and habits," said Mr. Cuthâ€" bertson "we find ourselves at times reâ€" ceiving very little encouragement to induce us to carry on." Mr. Cuthbertâ€" son pointed out the constant aemand for service work, particularly with the underprivileged in the town. He quotâ€" ed the impressive words:â€"‘I shall pass through this world but once. Any good vthat I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this further construction of highways is necessary to the development of Norâ€" thern Ontario, the Ontario Associated Boards of Trade and Chambers of Commerce urge the Ontario Governâ€" ment to give consideration to the plans submitted by the Timmins Board of Trade for a through highway between Timmins and Sudbury, and that a surâ€" vey of it be made at an early date." This resolution is for what is generâ€" ally known as the "Belt Line of Roads for the North." w The last resolution on the list for consideration (No. 12), is from the Haileybury Board of Trade, and deals with the settlement and development of Northern Ontario. It reads:â€" "Resolved: That in the opinion of the : Ontario Associated Boards of Trade and Chambers of Commerce, the setâ€". tlement and development of Northern: Ontario would be greatly advanced by providing improved side roads leading off the main roads, and where main roads do not exist side roads connectâ€" ing with the T. N. O. and Canadian National Railways for the accommodaâ€" tion of settlers, and, That the Governâ€" ment should limit the townships which would be open for settlement and enâ€" deavour to direct settlers to such townâ€" ships as are provided with proper roads and main drainage for each farm, such concentration of settlement thereby lessening the burden on the municiâ€" palities, as well as the Government, for schools and other necessary serâ€" vices." » again." Another of the THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, 1IMMINS, ONTARIO several apt and illuminating quotations made by Mr. Cuthbertson was:â€""He has achieved success who had lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelliâ€" gent men, and the love of little childâ€" ren:; who has left the world better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of earth‘s beauty, or failâ€" ed to express it; who has always lookâ€" ed for the best in others, and given the best be had; whose life was an inâ€" spiration, and whose memory is a benedi¢tion." "The times in which we live," said Mr. Cuthbertson, "have a distinct bearâ€" ing upon an organization such as Kiâ€" wanis, as our minds are so preâ€"occupiâ€" ed with business affairs We are livâ€" "Be pleasant until ten o‘clock in the morning, and the rest of the day will take care of itself," said Mr. Cuthbertâ€" son. It is an established fact, Mr. Cuthâ€" bertson pointed out, that the success of any organization depends on the. quality and unselfishness of its memâ€" bers. Kiwanis had always sought a high standard of membership and after years of experience the tendency was to even further raise the standard. "Quality membership," Mr. Cuthbertâ€" son proved, did not imply soâ€"called prominent men, whose only recomâ€" mendation is the holding of some high office or position; nor wealthy men who might give when sufficiently urged, but who are not even faintly interestâ€" ed in civic or national affairs; nor men who are inclined to make use of Kiâ€" wanis for their own ends; nor men who are continually starting something they can never finish; ror men comâ€" monly called "Joiners" who just want to belong and no more. Mr. Cuthbertson showed that rea‘ "quality membership" comprised the types of men who were inspired by a love for their fellows and a desire to help others, and were ready to work when called upon to do so. "Quality membership‘ meant boosters, not knockers. ‘"The world is looking for $1.00 any place in Timmins $2.00 to South Porcupine Just WATCH FOR THE CHECKER TAXI "Free Taxis Toâ€"morrow " Hamilton‘s One Dollar Checker Taxi 32 Third Avenue, Timmins Perfect Service e m i In concluding his address, Mr. Cuthâ€" tions| bertson said:â€""Permit me to close my â€""He| remarks by saying that the fundamenâ€" liveq| tal idea of Kiwanis is to build up uch;| service organization. It is necessary therefore, that we. as members, should put forth an effort to attend the weekâ€" ly luncheons regularly in order that we keep ourseives posted in the needs of community service. I think you will agree with me that any member can do almost any reasonable thing that he undertakes whether he has "any head for it or not" if he tries hard enough. This has been demonstrated on numerâ€" ous occasions. In our various occupaâ€" tions and professions we all have our places to fill in the world of activities." Mr. Cuthbertson spoke of the evils of procrastination, and of the class of men who hold back for fear of making mistakes.
