Preparations are now about completâ€" ed for the big Labour Day event at Iroâ€" quois Falls on Monday, Sept. 3rd. This is always a big day at Iroquois Talls,â€" a big day for all the district roundâ€" about, it being the habit each year for people from a 30â€"mile radius to gather at the Falls to enjoy the big programme always provided. This year‘s proâ€" gramme looks like the best yet. There is a big programme of fiekl sports, athletics, etc., and in addition there are a number of very attractive specials. One of the features of the day will be a number of speeches by distinguishâ€" ed orators from the district and outsid». Hon. Peter Heenan, Minister of Labour in the Dominion Government, will be one of the speakers, and his address is sure to be a matter of special interest. Another special address will be that of Mr. John P. Burke, president of the Inâ€" ternational Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulâ€" phite and Paper Mill Workers. Mr. Burke is known as the silverâ€"tongued orator of New York State, and he has facts and thoughtful opinions as well as unusual eloquence. Mr. Jos. A. Braâ€" dette, M.P., and Mr. A. F. Kenning, M.P.P., will also be present for the ocâ€" casion, and the speeches should be aâ€" mong the most attractive features of McIntyre Baseball Team to Play a Team of Oldâ€"Timers. Addresses to be Given by Hon. Peter Heenan, Dominion Minister of Labour; John P. Burke, Viceâ€"President International Pulp and Sulphite Workers, and Other Distinguished Speakers. Special Features Labour Day Events at Iroquois Falls A high goal unattained is preferable to a low goal attained. The sports programme is now comâ€" pleted, and includes a remarkable arâ€" ray of field sports, athletics, etc. One of the baseball games will be a match that no baseball fan should miss. This is the match between the MciIintyre Baseball team, of Schumacher, chamâ€" pions of the northern group, and a team of the oldâ€"timers of Iroquois Falls area. Also, it may be noted that every effort is being made to secure the Teâ€" miskaming baseball playâ€"offs. In any case there will be two baseball matches of particular merit. The sports part of the programme is one that no true ball fan would care to miss. Other feaâ€" tures will be equally attractive. As usual each year, the annual ball given by the Pulp and Sulphite Union will be the perfect ending to a perfect day. This dance will be held in what is described as "the largest and most upâ€"toâ€"date hall in the North Land. The capacity of this hall is easily 500, so there will be no difficulty in accomâ€" modating any crowd that may gatlier. The dancing will start at 9 p.m. the day‘s events. The speaking will start at 3 p.m. â€"Exchange We have taken the gasoline and oil for Hassell in our motor dory and outâ€" board special three miles farther up the fjord, but this is only possible at full tide, which here has a range of about seventeen feet. For the last three miles the gasoline must be packed over a moderately difficult trail, but by tour de force our party of whites and Eskimos transhipped 250 gallons in thirtyâ€"six hours. If you do your best, you can stand up against the worst that may befall. â€"Exchange. To an anchorage a mile off Camp Lloyd it can be brought by tramyp steamer, or it can be brought in one of the regular Danish Government summer steamers to Holstensborg, and transhipped to one of the government motor vessels,or as we have done, by the small motor sloops used for halibut fishâ€" ing here, chartered for the purpose. This in no way covers the future posâ€" sibilities for landing here. A thousand feet only from the present field is a larger one of the same natitre, which is about 3,500 feet in length; but in places this is covered over with some scattered boulders, some so large as to to require dynamite to remove them, and although demanding a greater exâ€" penditure of time and labour than we have available here, the cost of transâ€" forming it into a future landing field would be small compared to what is often expended for such purposes. To both these fields gasoline can be brought without special difficulty. But as a continent, Greenland has in very recent times been uplifted from the sea and remnants of earlier sand and clay filats in places now lie out of reach of the floods and hardened by the hand of time. On one of these uplifted clay flats near Camp Lloyd, is situated the runway, which is only 1,500 feet in length, but could with but little outlay be extended to 1,700; too short however, for a takeâ€"off for a longer hope than that to TIceland. Greenland is a vast country, iceâ€" covered except for a marginal ribbon of land of most rugged and forbidding character, where one hardly looks for landing places for airplanes. Most characteristic of the country are the straight steepâ€"walled and deep fjords, which cut up the country in every diâ€" rection, and the sand and mud flats at their heads are flooded by the rivers after each summer‘s hot period. From Cape Chidley, at the east of Hudson Straits, to our landing fileld near Camp Lloyd is a little over 500 miles. The distance across Greenland and Iceland is less than 900 miles, and thence to London about the same. Toâ€" ward north central Europe and the Scandinavian capitals the route from Iceland lies across the Faroes, where perhaps a landing field can in the fuâ€" ture be secured to divide the distance. On this same great circle lies Los Anâ€" geles and San Diego. The direct or Great Circle route from the heart of the United States, and the future centre of its industrial life in the Mississippi Valley, to Northern Europe lies near to the route which Hassell has marked, on which Greenâ€" land and Iceland are the necessary bases for refueling. None such is to be found elsewhere. Along this route Canada offers suitable terrain for reâ€" fueling stations every 500 miles so soon as the country is opened up or this need is fully appreciated. of the opportunity it affords of explorâ€" ing the Greenland ice cap along a new route and by an essntially new method, or even because of the scientific data likely to be secured concerning the atâ€" mospheric conditions over the itce cap by use. of the aerometeorograph or aerograph constructed for us by the famous instrument makers, Julien P. Friez and Sons of Baltimore. This selftâ€" registering instrument will be attached to the plane here and carried to Iceâ€" land. My chief interest is due to my firm conviction that Greenland oifers the one feasible route by airplane from America to Europe and countries east. Transatlantic fiying will remain a stunt only, and one great hazard, for one reason, because the elapsed time of the transit is so close to the endurâ€" ance limit of airplanes. The flight of Bert Hassell and Parâ€" ker Cramer from America to Eurone by way of Greenland and Iceland is an exâ€" periment of much moment to aviation, whether it shall now prove a complete success or not. My inter and coâ€" operation in it arises not a because Writing from Mount Evans, Greenâ€" land, to The Cochrane Northland Post, Prof. W. H. Hobbs, leader of the Uniâ€" versity of Michigan Greenland Expediâ€" tion, holds that the only feasible airâ€" ship route from America to Europe is by way of Greenland. In the following article he makes it clear why he holds this view :â€" * ROUTE VIA GREENLAND UNLY FEASIBLE ROUTE sSuch a Route to Europe Would Use Cochrane as One of the Reâ€"Fuellâ€" ing Bases. Professor Gives Views THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, ‘lIiMMINS, ONTARIO About $7,000,000 is spent each year by the Canadian Government for the promotion of the agricultural industry. â€"Exchange We all have so much hard luck ourâ€" selves that we are often actually pleasâ€" ed to hear of the troubles of others. During the last years Miss Crawford has been featured in almost a dozen big pictures, including "Sally, Irene and Mary," "Paris," "The Underâ€" standing Heart," "The Taxi Dancer," and others. She has recently appeared opposite John Gilbert in "Twelve Miles QOut" and opposite William Haines in "Spring Fever" and "West Point." "Roseâ€"Marie" is coming to the Goldâ€" fields on Friday and Saturday of this week, August 3l1st and Sept. ist. Murray was next featured in John M. Sthl‘s "In Old Kentucky" and was later given the leading male romantic role opposite Marceline Day in Lon Chaney‘s "The Big City." Yet Murray with only a year to his credit, has appeared in the featured male roles of some of Metroâ€"Goldwynâ€" Mayer‘s most important productions of the year. He proved himself an actor of more than ordinary ability with his first roleâ€"the male lead of King Viâ€" dor‘s twelveâ€"reel special, "The Crowd," in which Eleanor Boardman had the feminine lead. The principal romantic leads of ‘"Roseâ€"Marie," a film version of the famous musical play of the same name which Metroâ€"Goldwynâ€"Mayer has just produced as one of its big special features of the year, are played by the two youngest members of the cast, both as to years and screen experience. Joan Crawford, with less than three years‘ experience on the screen, drew the coveted title role which every young actress of the screen had hoped to get. Gertrude Astor, Ralph Yearsley and half dozen others who appear in the very lavish picturization of the famous play, were well established on the screen before the leading players ever dreamed of film careers. Famous Film, "Roseâ€"Marie" Coming to the Goldfields House Peters, Creighton Hale, Gibson Gowland, Polly Moran, Lionel Belmore, William Orlamond, and other members of the cast were veterans of stage and screen long before Joan or Jimmie ever attended a picture show. James Murray, who has beem in picâ€" tures less than a year, won the leading male romantic role against a field of more than fifty better known and more experienced motion picture actors.
