They deâ€" feated the redoubtable Fire Brigade hockey team during the weekâ€"end, the score being 8 to 6, according to the Marshallâ€"Ececelestone Hardware men, and 6 to 4, according to some of the Firemen. Both sides admit,â€"the one gladly and the other sadlyâ€"that the Firemen were licked. _ This is the first defeat suffered in several years by the Firemen‘s hockey team and they are not used to taking it. The Firemen have two alibis. First, the chief was unable to be present on account of a bad cold; and secondly, the Firemen didn‘t have a single spare, sub, or extra man. The season ‘s not over yet, however, they point out, and they will still maintain at all costs their hockey supremacy. The game during the weekâ€"end was i lively one, with heavy checking and oldâ€"time hockey rushes featured. The zvame was clean and had lots of good sport, and the fans thoroughly enâ€" joyed it. Mr. Albert Portelance was the referee, and he kept both teams down to good hockey. The following were the lineâ€"ups :â€"â€" HARDWARE MEN DEFEAT FIREMEN IN HOCKEY, Marshall â€" Eeclestone _ Hardwareâ€" J. R. Walker, goal; W. G. Smith and A. Quesnell, defence; J. Apparently the material burned was refuse from the underground thaw in the fifth level. If this is correcet such material would quickly generate a tremendous volume of smoke and fumes ‘heavily charged with earbon monoxide gas. Carried by the ventilation current these fumes ramdlv filled the central portion of the mine in the vicinity of number tweive shaf‘t. ‘‘The mine records show that 921 men were underground at 9 a.m. Friâ€" day. This number included foremen, samplers and surveyors. "Smoke was first reported at 8.15 Friday tenth and the area affected localized at 8.45 a.m. by Mine Capt. Jolhnson who finding it impossible on account of the gas to reach the fire with the water, hose sent word to all foreâ€" men to get their men out of the mine. Final check up on Friday showed 51 men nnaceounted for. Most of these men were in a district adjacent to the fire and under the supervision of Mine Captain Pond and Shiftboss Graham who were overâ€" come by gas while attempting to reach their men. Graham died, Pond was resuscitated on the surface. "©The rescue apparatus sent by the Consumers Gas and Toronto Fire Deâ€" partment was used on Saturday and twelve men found their way out or were reseued with the aid of this apâ€" paratus. On the arrival of the Unitâ€" ed States Bureau of Mines reseue car Sunday morning an attack was made on the fire zone, the immediate obâ€" ject being to stop the formation of the dense smoke which prevented resâ€" cue operations throughout the mine. ‘"UTUp to twelve noon Monday 29 bodies have been recovered and 10 men are still unaccounted for. Locaâ€" tion of the bodies recovered indicates that the majority of ithe men were overcome by earbon monoxide gas while making their way to the shaft.‘‘ * (signed)} T. F. All Inâ€" terested Should Attend There have been many enquiries during the past month or two in reâ€" gard to the Porecupine Dog Race and Carnival. Dr. J. A. Melnnis, the preâ€" sident of the committee, had arranged to call a meeting last week to make the necessary arrangements and preâ€" parations for the big winter feature this year, but the disaster at the Holâ€" linger on Feb. 10th upset all plans. This week, however, Dr. Meinnis has called a meeting of all interâ€" ested in the Dog Race to meet in the town hall, Timmins, on Saturday afternoon of this week, Feb. 25th, at 4.30 o‘celock to diseuss plans and preâ€" paration§ for this yvear‘s dog race. {t is felt that if a race is to be held this year, the date be set at a very early date or it will likely turn out like last year that mild weather will make the holding of the race imposâ€" sible. _ Those who have considered the matter carefully are sure that the race should not be scheduled for later than the beginning of March. _ Inâ€" deed, the general opinion is that Febâ€" ruary is the right month for the race, unless it were to be brought on in January. It is true that the average date on which dog races have been | January. It is true that the average date on which dog races have been successfully held would uphold a date in the latter part of February or the beginning of March, but in recert years the breakâ€"up seems to come earlier and it is generally felt that the earlier the race is scheduled the more chancee there is for succeess. All interested in the dog race and carnival, which for many years, was the big sports feature of the winter here, should make a point of attendâ€" ing the meeting called for Saturday of this week, Feb. 25th, in the town hall at 4.30. TELEPHONE OPERATOR SAVES LIVES OF FAMILY. The thoughtfulness and prompt acâ€" tion of Miss Marjory Mackie, a teleâ€" phone operator at North Bay, saved a family of three from death from coal gas fumes one morning last week. She received a telephone ecall, but when she answered all she could hear was a faint ery of ‘‘Doctor,‘‘ and then only the erying of children. The young ledy had the call traced at once and a doctor. was despatched to the home of Mrs. M. Kelly, wife of Mr. M. Kelly, travelling freight agent of the C.P.R. When the doctor arâ€" rived he found Mrs. Kelly and her two children partially overcome by coal gas fumes. Mrs. Kelly was awakened about seven o‘clock by her threeâ€"yearâ€"old son who was coughing very vigorously. Mrs. Kelly on risâ€" ing to see what was wrong with the child found that she herself was weak and dizzy. She realized that the trouble came from coal gas and manâ€" aged to get the front door open. Then she attempted to telephone for help but collapsed at the phone after getâ€" ting the receiver off the hook and calling ‘*‘Doctor.‘‘ On reviving Mrs. Kelly phoned again, this time for a near neighbour, and though the reâ€" ceiver had broken so that Mrs. Kelly could not hear the operator, Miss Mackie put the call through in reâ€" cord time, the neighbour and the doeâ€" tor arriving at the same time. The family recovered in very short time from the unpleasant experience, but there is little doubt that without the prompt presence of mind of the teleâ€" phone operator the story might have ended differently. Many in Timâ€" mins are acquainted with Mr. Kelly, whose duties bring him here on occaâ€" sion, and so there will be personal interest in the account. When eursâ€" ing telephone operators for **wrong numbers‘‘ or failure to answer promptly or other of the crimes so often laid to their charge, it is well to remember a story like this which vives a picture of the other side,â€" the thoughtful and interested side that is ready to give needed help in record time when the occasion deâ€" mands.
