Three Clerks Injured in Jumping from Second Storey Windows. Canadian 13, on Thursda worst to vi Canadian Departmental Store, No. 13, North Bay, was destroyed by fire on Thursday last, the blaze being the worst to visit North Bay for several years past. The loss is estimated as around $200,000. Adjoining buildâ€" ings also were slightly dmaged. Alâ€" though the origin of the fire is not definitely known it is thought that it started in the incinerator shed and spread to the main building. . The theory is that the incinerator at the rear of the store had been filled too full with papers and the fire had thus taken hold on the building. Three clerks, Misses Annie Robb, Lillian Betteridge and Thelma Leishman, were cut off from exits by the rapid spread of the flames, and jumped from second storey windows. _ Miss Leishman was painfully injured in the back and Miss Robb was hurt about the face and knees. The manager of the store, Mr. Perey A. Huntington, prevented the chance of general inâ€" jury to clerks and customers by promptly having the store cleared as soon as the fire was noted. He assistâ€" ed in the work of seeing that all got to safety. He received severe burns about the hands and face while workâ€" ing for the safety of others. / It was pay day at the store and several emâ€" ployees had left their pay envelopes in the pockets of their coats in the cloak rooms. They were unable to get their clothes out of the ecloak room, so rapid was the progress of the fire. The books and accounts of the store were destroyed in the fire, but dupliâ€" cates are on fyle in the head office at Toronto. _ The firemen are said to have done specially good work at this fire, the dense smoke and the rapid spread of the flames making the work of fireâ€"fichting both difficult and danâ€" gerous It is understood that the loss is fully covered by insurance, there beâ€" ing $100,000 on the building and anâ€" other $100,000 on the stock. notire must hb nameég, of the w for putbplication good faith.
