ELEGTRIGAL METROD OF PROSPEGTING FOR ORE Dr. Hans Lundberg Gives Interesting Address to Mining Institute at Toronto So much use has been made of the electrical methods of ore prospecting that in this country the matter has become of interest practically to all. Accordingly, there will be many who will find a recent address by Dr. Hans Lundberg to the Toronto Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy of more than passing imâ€" portance. In the course of his adâ€" dress Dr. Lundberg said that, though attention had been directed to the subject, it was only in recent years that electrical prospecting had been put to practical use. It had hbeen found especially useful in Sweden, in the Unitedw States and in different parts of Canada and Newfoundland. He pointed out that the method used was to do reconnaissance work first, and, if this secured promising indiâ€" cations or reactions, then they did inâ€" tensive work in the spots which seemâ€" ed ‘best, and this would be followed by diamond drilling. Dr. Lundberg claimed that they could sometimes discover ore at depths of 300 or 400 feet. This was especially valuable in such places as Rouyn, where there was a heavy overâ€" burden. . They had been able to deâ€" tect deposits through sand, gravel, drift and boulder formations. _ The cost was about $2.50 to $4.50 per acre, though the general preliminary work did not cost as much. The information gained was someâ€" times negative, the object of electriâ€" cal prospect being to direct diamond drilling. The mineralization indicatâ€" ed was not always economic, but was effective in directing the diamond where it would do most good. _ This method, he said, had been used with good results in the Hollinger holdâ€" ings in the Kamiskotia district. The Ontario Government had company to do a lot of its work by electricial prospecting. It had been found useful a year ago in Red Lake on the Howie and adjacent properties, and also on the Potterdoal, in Munro Township. Electrical prospecting has heretoâ€" fore been found most useful in the location of sulphide ore bodies, for example, copper and the base metals, and not much has been done in the successful locating of gold. _ Notr have they gone very far in the loca tion of oil deposits though effort were being made in that direction. An interesting talk was also giver by (4. Deschantre of Paris, on the re sults obtained by the Schlimberger r French, method. The same objectt was sought by the company using ‘his method, but in a different way. }%)th of the companies have theit Â¥iadian headquarters in Toronto, *.,*, 0. { 00‘0.00. It was expected that athletes would give a better account of themselves. But the club isn‘t on a river side, either. Howey and Smith, however, stayed with the discovery and took a small gang of men in to explore the ground and ascertain its extent. Delays were experienced at the start, but they managed to do censiderable surâ€" face work and when they returned to Haileybury brought back several hunâ€" dred pounds of samples, most of which showed free gold. Specia) correspondence in The Toâ€" ronto Globe this week from Haileyâ€" bury says that active development of the gold discovery made last summer by Lorne Howey of Haileybury and Bill Smith of Cobalt, near Fort Hope, in the Albany River district, is planâ€" ned for this winter. A company known as Fort Hope Mines, Limited, has been formed, and arrangements have been made to finance the operaâ€" tions. The intention is to take a small plant into the property this winter. J. W. Morrison, wellâ€"known Haileyâ€" bury mining engineer, has been apâ€" pointed consulting engineer, and he plans to make a trip into the property early in the new year. It is interâ€" esting to note that this development will be about the farthest north in the Patricia district. Last August reference was made to ‘‘a rich gold strike on the Albany River.‘‘* This was followed by an exâ€" odus of wellâ€"known prospectors from this section and they all returned without staking any ground. They stressed the difficulty of getting to the scene of the discovery, but said that the country had possibilities. It was felt that an ®outstanding disâ€" covery would be necessary to aâ€" rouse interest. One prospector statâ€" ed that he only saw a few splashes of porphyry.
