The contenders for the championship of the Timmins Club this year are Messrs G. 8. Lowe and Geo. Lake. 126 PECULIAR ACCIDENT TO TRAINMAN ON ROUYN LINE John Burns, fireman on the C.N.R. branch to Rouyn met with an odd acâ€" cident that came remarkably close to costing him his life. _ He was looking out of the cab window, leaning far out and looking back, when his head struck the spout of a water tower. The fireman was rendered unconscious and remained for a considerable time in that condition. He was hurried to the Rouyn hospital where he is now making good progress to recovery. At first it was feared that he might not recover. He apparently had a fracture at the base of the skull. However, he is doing well now and will soon be all right again. BLACKBIRDS CAUSE SOME DAMAGE AT GOLF LINKS A large flock of blackbirds during Saturday night or early Sunday mornâ€" ing created some devastation on the local golf links. Sunday golfers were treated to the unusual sight of seeing the cup on, one of the greens dug out on one side. The blackbirds, noticed in large numbers on the local links that morning, were responsible for this. Then again on the old green on number eight fairway large sections of grass were dug out very neatly all over one section of the old green. The same thieves of the air were reâ€" sponsible for this. Apparently the blackbirds pay as much attention to the ‘‘No Trespssing‘‘ signs as some of those who wander over the local links at will, without any apparent fear of being hit by a golfer who has just missed a four inch put, and who isn ‘t in the best of humour when he stands up at the next tee for a drive. _â€"Little Willie was going to a party. ‘‘Now Willie,‘‘ his mother cautioned, "‘"if you are offered a second piece of cake you must refuse, as it would not be polite to take two.‘"‘ THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO HUNOREDS OF MUTOR CARS VISITING TEMAGAMI NOW Great Lineâ€"up of Cars at New Garage at Temagami Every Day Recentâ€" Great Increase in Trafâ€" \ fic Over New Trunk Road *The new Ferguson highway is cerâ€" tainly proving a great means of pubâ€" licity for the North Land. In the South nearly everybody is interested in the North, and the influx of tourâ€" ists into the country is most marked. The increase in business at Temagami is an example of what the new trunk road is doing for the North. _ The number visiting Temagami for fishing, camping and other holiday purposes is many times this year what it has been in previous years. _ One man from Timmins who has just returned from an extended trip in the South told this week of the increased business at Temagami, famous for years as a summer resort. In other years access to Temagami was only hy railroad. Since the opening of the Ferguson highway, the famous summer resort may be reached also by motor trip from North Bay. Accordingly, there is a great increase in the number of visitors. Not only from North Bay and other Northern centres, and from Toronto and other provincial centres, but also from othe provinces and from the States seores of parties are motoring to Temagami each week. An enterprising resident at Temagami has erected a storage garage that will hold over 60 ecars. This garage is full most of the time. On Saturday last not only was the garage, or shed, full to capacity, but the owner of the place had to park another forty cars in his yard, making over 100 cars in his care for the day. As the charge for storage is $1.00 per day, the enâ€" terprising gentleman has not lost any money on the plan. Lc OO 00. omm mt n ut That the influx of tourists into the North will ‘be of benefit to the country zgoes without saying. It might also be remarked that the interest aroused by the publicity given the Ferguson highâ€" way, even among those who have not used the road, is also very valuable and will prove of help in the work of developing the great North Land. NEWSPAPER PRESENTED WITH BOUQUET OF ROSES In the last issue of The New Lisâ€" keard Speaker the following paraâ€" graph appears :â€" ‘*Roses, like many flowers, grow to perfection in this climate and soil. Some perfect specimens of a dark red rose adorned our deck last week from the garden of Rev. Mr. Omond. Then Mrs. H. R. Baker, of Harley, sent us a box of lovely large pink roses, so many that we shared in Mrs. Baker‘s name, their beauty in a number of different homes. _ When Mrs. Baker came to Harley first, many years ago, it was practically stlll a forest. But with true optimism and because of her great love of flowers, she brought a Tfub of perennials, planting them beâ€" tween the stumps. Later through Mrs. Baker‘s generosity, many a home had its perennial border start.‘‘ Vancouver, British Columbiaâ€"Briâ€" tish Columbia is rapidly organizing a fur farming industry of considerable importance, and some ambitious schemes for the ranching of muskrats are jbeing put into effect. The proâ€" vince has already an annual revenue of $3,000,000 from raw furs, but with mnumerable valleys suitable for furâ€" farming enterprises and an ideal cliâ€" mate, the possibilities are bright. For Sale By Championship Baseball at Timmins on August 24 25 The finals of the Temiskaming Baseâ€" ball League and for the R. A. Melnâ€" nis trophy will be between Melntyre, of Schumacher, and the classy Silver Centre team. There will be home and home games. _ The first two games will be at Timmins athletie grounds on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, August 24th and 25th,. The matches will commence at 4.30 p.m. sharp. They will undoubtedly be the best games of the season and every baseball fan should plan to be present. Be sure to be there for both games and ready to cheer the Melntyre to victory. The Melutyre team has played great ball this season and will very worthily represent the northern section of the league. Play Here for the Championship of Temiskaming Baseâ€" ball League and the R. A. McInnis Trophy. Next Wedâ€" nesday and Thursday Between Mcintyre and Silver Centre, Two Splendid Teams. On Friday and Saturday last Silver Centre won from Lake Shore, the seores being 14 to 4 and 13 to 11 reâ€" spectively. _ ~Silver Centre thus has only one more game to win, while Lake Shore \\ou]d have to win three straights. As Silver Centre has very evidently the better team it would seem to be a foregone conclusion that they will be the winners of the souâ€" thern and central groups and so the contenders for the league championâ€" ship with Melntyre next week. In discussing the Silver Centre team recently, The Haileyburian says:â€"â€" "Silver Centre has a smart ball team, strong hitters and fair fielders in almost every position, and should give battle to all and sundry in defence of the trophy which they captured last year. â€"In the box they have Earl Newâ€" kirk, pitching better ball than ever, Mullin, who has looked very good at times this season, Russ. Lemon and Frank Gregg, Haileybury boys, both The Weed Scourge The Department of Agriculture HON.JOHN S. MARTIN The weed scourge is costing Ontario $5,000,000 a year. A share of this money should be inyourpocket! Instead, this money is wasted. And the waste is increasing! Is it fair to your neighbor if your weedâ€" infested fields, fence rows and idle places are scattering weed seeds over his land? Is it fair to yourself if your own weeds are scattering their seeds all over yout land? The time has come for united action! The weed scourgeishould not be merely ‘fought‘" â€"it should be exterminated! Weeds can be exterminated, but only by determined and united action! The help of every man, woman, boy and girl is needed. Under the provisions of The Weed Control Act 1927, now in force, the destruction of noxious weeds is no longer optional. The desâ€" truction of noxious weeds is now compulsory. Every occupant of land and every owner of unoccupied land is required to destroy all noxious weeds before their seeds ripen. Munâ€" icipal councilsare required to destroy all noxâ€" ious weeds growing upon the highways. Let everyone coâ€"operate to end the weed nuisâ€" ance. Minister Province of Ontario Parliament Buildings, Toronto oNnTARIG |I tinitial with a nice assortment of hooks and smoke, and Harry Cowden, who caâ€" vorts at almost any position, can also toss in some foolers. Behind the plate they have Brock Cross, a smart receiver, with plenty of pep and great wing. Seth and Harry Cowder can also handle shoots back of the plate _ creditably. Archie Howes looks after the initial sack in good style and Stan. Lemon strengthens the second ‘base position over last year. Harry Cowden, the mainspring of the team, is thg regular shortâ€"stop and gobbles up l#oists and drives that are meant for hits, with nonchalance. Scott, the new third ibaseman, is sweet fielder, and wields a wicked bludgeon. Seott adds needed strength to the hot corner. There are quite a number of candidates for outheld berths, among them being Seth Cowâ€" den, Eddie St. Cyr, Charlhe Graham, Wilf. Lanthier, Russ. Lemonâ€" and Frank Gregg, so that this department will be looked after in the playâ€"offs. McCann, Hulse, Nagle, and Garmson are others who can be ealled on for service if needed. There is no dearth of material in Silver Centre ths seaâ€" son. They have really : two good teams, so that, with any of the well known breaks in luck, they should repeat last season‘s performance of winning the title in the T.B.L."" Mcelntyre team, it may be said, will represent this northern group in effeeâ€" tive way. â€" They had a victory last year in an exhibition game, and are anxious for the finals to show that they can do their part this year all right. They are an equally smart team. â€" Nottingham is the pitching ace and Valin is a good sub. Angrigon, who plays third base, can also twirl if called upon. Fitzjohn is the smartâ€" est receiver in the North. Gauthier and Rothwell at second and short will take care of their departments in the best of style. Parks holds down the sack in effective way. The best of style. Parks holds down the initial sack in effective way. The field will be well taken ceare of by Chisholm, Valentine, Stevenson and Dickson. The McIntyre tehm won the Mines League the two previous years, and this year entered the Temiskamng Baseball League, and coming out on top should bring the K. A. Mceinnis trophy to the North this year. aftter th * Dammit hanged n W. B. ROADHOUSE Deputy Minister 75 up m s now ) {0o
