Dr. (George Calls Attention to Ipjusâ€" tice to Towns Through Indigents from Unorganized Territory. and when illness comes are unable to pay for the services of a doctor, who has to travel often twenty miles to their home. The Goyernment should assume the responsibility of providing medical attention and not throw the burden on the doctors.‘‘ That the . Ontario Government should relieve the municipalities of the heavy burden of looking after the shifting indigents who crowd espeâ€" ciglly into such towns as Port Arâ€" thur, Fort William, North Bay and Timmins, and cities like Toronto each winter, was the opinion expressed by Dr. W. E. George, M.O.H. of North Bay, and others before the Ontario Health Officers‘ Association rgc‘ent.ly. Dr. George urged that legislation should be sought iby which provision for providing medical attendance. to the struggling settlers in frontier disâ€" tricts of the province would be made. He pointed out that under the presâ€" ent Act in organized districts the county is responsible for providing medical care for indigent people, and that in â€"unorganized districts the Goâ€" vernment will assume responsibility for their care in a hospital in an orâ€" ganized section, but will not include medical attention. x #1â€" 24 _‘These people are brought into the new districts by the Government, have a hard time establishing themselves, Dr. George said he knew of many doctors who freely gave their services to such and never expected nor receivâ€" ed payment. He instanced the case of one man who, after some years in a frontier town had to leave it with some $10,000 of uncollectable money owing him. Another doctor, succeedâ€" ing him, left some yearm later with a similar amount owing him and a third doctor was now trying it.. The doctor urged that both medical relief and poor relief should be placed under the localâ€" board of health. He thought more efficient ard economical administration of aid would result. â€" Dr. C. N. Laurie, of Port Atthut, Moverynntmdthirdm of every month in the basement of Church. favoured a system of compulsory unâ€" employment insurance as a«xremedy for the situation faced by towns whoâ€" found themselves burdened by unemâ€" ployed men in winter. It would be better than burdening the working. population‘of taowns with the support annually of the wandering workless and prove less.. demoralizing to the; recipients than ‘indiscriminate charity He pointed out that the railways and Government agents ibrought out men from Central Europe who, getting out of work in winter, drifted into Port Arthur ~and other towns from the fields and mines and woods, and these towns had>to look after them during the winter. _ The towns, he thought, had enough to do to look after their. own poor without having people who had no claim as citizens thrown on them, § . § Edgarâ€"‘‘Do â€"you know the differâ€" ences between trying to kiss you and trying to kiss Mary Jones?!‘‘ .
