The most mysteriâ€" ous feature of it is the fact that the blaze started from some unknown cause, burned for some time and went out before any one saw it. It was only when Fire Chief Merkley, who occupies oneâ€"half of the building with the offices of the Canadian Pacific Exâ€" press and his wallpaper and paint store, came down on Tuesday morning that any knowledge of the fire came _to light. When he opened the door the place was full of smoke, but there was no fire. _ On looking over the premises, he found that the under side of the floor and the joist below were badly charred over the greater part of the surface, some empty fruit baskets which had been piled in the basement were partly burned and in one place the flames had penetrated the floor to his store. There was not a sign of a spark or any fire when the place was looked over. While nothing deâ€" finite can be ascertained albout the origin of the fire, Mr. Merkley says that it is possible that it started from the light wires which run along through the joists under the floor.. The insulation is gone _ from portions of the wire, but whether this was caused by the fire or was the cause of the fire, eannot be definitely known. It is thought that the entire absence of draft in the basement of the building was the réason the fire burned itself out. There was no furnace or any heating apparatus in the basement, the furâ€" nace having been taken out some time ago and the building heated with stoves. Even the inlet of the chimâ€" ney had been stopped up and the winâ€" dows were closed tight, so there was no draft for the fire. One of the peâ€" culiar features of the affairs is that Haileybury last week had a truly mysterious ‘fire,â€"Mysterious as to chow it started and how it burned itselt out, and â€"also with other odd touches, such as the fact that part of the buildâ€" ing was occupied by the Fire Chief, and he was the first to learn that there had lbeen a fire and the fire was out again without the need of his brigade. The Haileyburian tells the story in full as, follows :â€" MVSTERIDUS BLAZE IN AAILEVBURY LAST WEEK _ Room 4â€"I. V. During the past few weeks, according to The New Liskeard Speaker, Messrs Hill, Clark and There will be general pleasure in Timmins and district at the announceâ€" ment that the Schumacher Choral Soâ€" ciety will give a sacred concert in the (Goldfields Theatre, Timmins on sunday evening, Dec. 12th after the church services. _ Those who recall previous events given by the Schuâ€" macher Choral Society will know that the event on Sunday is sure to be an enjoyable musical event, attractive and pleasing in every way,. There should be an unusually large attendance for this event on Sunday evening after the church services. CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT AT GOLDFIELDS, SUNDAY where the flame had broken through the floor, there were a number of cans of \'armsh remover, which is highly inflammable, stdndmw on a ple('e of board whwh covered an opening that had been used for a register when the furnace was in use. Although these cans were blackened with smoke and had evidently been licked by the flame, they did not take fire or exâ€" plode. Chief Merkley states that he was in the basement at 10.45 on Monâ€" day night and there was then no sign of fire. No one saw the flames or had any knowledge of them until he came down in thc morning. . Hs considers himself pretty lucky in havâ€" ing no worse damage than the fact that his stock of wallpapers is slightâ€" ly blackened by the smoke and none of the e express goods suffered. _ The tarlor shop of . Seguin in the other side of the building also suffered from the smoke,. The damage to the buildâ€" ing itself is apparently not serious, as none of the joists were burned through and the floor is only partly Room IIâ€"A. M.
