First aid to the injured is a special branch of practical ~medicine and surgery, by a knowledge of which trained persons are enabled to afford skilled assistance in case of accident or sudden illness. _ The value of the work was very apparent here some months ago when a serious accident occeurred on street. There were many people around who felt useless and hopeless. ~They Aelt nothing could be done until a doctor came, and yet they felt much should be done. Then a man awith a knowledge of first aid was secured, and saved the situation until a doetor was secured. There should be general interest in this first arid work, and any who wish further particulars should comâ€" municate with the secretary, Mr. G. A. Gibson, Box 1175, Timmins. The secretary, Mr. W. 0. Langdon, took over the office when everything was at odds, and he has been successful in having everything now put on a satisfactory basis. Thevre are bloodâ€"ecurdling stales told recently of weird and uncanny nmscs issuing from the very bowels of the earth. _A man will be working underâ€" ground at one of the mines when sudâ€" den]\ the damp air will rent with a sound. never before heard on land or seaâ€"a noise that curdles the blood and freezes the marrow, so inâ€" human and so strange is the fiendish cry that shatters the air.. Most men smlpl\ get to another part of the mine as soon as possible when this terrible, supernatural sound is heard. (One man, braver than the most, folâ€" lowed the sound and returned white and shaken to whisper huskily about strange aboriginal men forms that he thought he saw in the far recesses of one drift. Day after day the weird sounds continued, none were brave enough to trace them to their source. â€" Then it was noted that the despairing wails were only noted either before or after blasting. Conâ€" sequently, it was eventually decided by the men harassed by the appalling noises that the sounds had some conâ€" nection with explosives in some way. So it was arranged to put it up to the Canadian Explosives. man on his next visit to the mine. Tuesday he was at the mine, just as the startling cries were at their weirdest. ** Would he investigate?"‘ He sure would. He went dm\ n the drift, brave and bold, while the men stoo@® nervously m'ail‘ing his return, if he were to return.
