The pupils of the Public School unâ€" der the direction of Miss Burns, are preparing for another grand concert. We believe their operetta this time is entitled, ‘‘The Magie Ruby.‘‘ Those who remember their suceess two years ago will be eager for the presentation of this play. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grewcoe have moved into their new residence on Connaught Hill. A number _ of â€"friends from Schuâ€" macher planned a surprise party for Mr. and Mirs. Varker at the Dome Extension recently. _A lively time was enjoyed by all. ' Mrs. Sandy Hogg is enjoying a holiâ€" day trip. Mrs. A. E. (hambe)s of the Dome, in on a two months‘ vacatlon to To- ronto. Mr. Stern was formerly in charge of Sky Bros. store here. Mrs. MacFarlane, of Renfrew, is a visitor at the home of Mr. R. Bowes. Miss Dorothy Woods, of New Lisâ€" keard, has been on a visit to her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Woods. Word has been received that Mrs. R. On Saturday evening one of the local jitney drivers collided with a privatelyâ€"owned ear on Bruce avenue in front of Jas. Alexander‘s residence. Both cars are decidedly the worse for the mixâ€"yp, but luekily none of the occupants of either ear .were badly injured. _ One of the passengers of the jitney, who had just got into the car about three minutes before, got a rather unpleasant smash in the face that drove his tooth through his lip, but as he was in the front seat when the two cars met he thinks himself lucky, to be no worse. Word was received at the Dome Exâ€" tension this week that a young son had arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Heard, now in England. Mr. Heard was formerly a stope boss at the Dome Mines and theirâ€" many friends here will be glad to congratuâ€" late them. Master Reg. This is his first visit here since he left shortly after the 1916 fire and the extent of the farming development in Hackmeyer and Clute simply amazed him. **Mr. Burns has just completed a tour through the Western provinces, after making the tour through the Maritimes and Quebec province, so that with his present trip through Northern Ontario he has completed his tour through the Dominion. While he has travelled the Dominion repeatedly to get the larger outlook on general business this is the first time that he has visited the North and he is decidedly optimistic with regard to the outlook for progress and development here. His present trip has been a great eyeâ€"opener to him.. He is enthusiastically supportâ€" ing the project of ‘‘On to the Bay" and looks forward to an early reâ€" sumption of the work on the extenâ€" sion of the T. As a conseâ€" quence of this decision practically all the staffs of the grocery â€"and meat stores had the advantage of the beautiful afternoon yesterday, and the inconvenience to the public was practically negligible. The public are accustomed still to the summer halfâ€"holiday and so find the continuâ€" ance of the early closing of no partiâ€" cular annoyance. Certainly, the advanâ€" _tage to the stores and staffs is worth a lot. It is to be hoped that the other stores will follow the good exâ€" ample of the grocery and meat stores and inaugurate a general halfâ€"holiday each week the year round. The stores would find that they would do as much or more, business in the shorter hours; it would mean better service for the public because of the added zest and interest of the staffs ‘of the stores; and the staffs would be benefitted by a deserved reduction in hours. Probably the general pubâ€" lic would be the most benefitted, for every betterment in conditions in one The North Land Post, of Cochrane last week says :â€" T. N.0O. COMMISSION AND GUESTS TOUR THE NORTH line .of labour tends to set: better standards all round and so improves conditions in every other line of emâ€" ployment. Although the byâ€"law is not yet passed, the grocery and meat stores in Timmins this week showed they were in earnest in regard to the Wedâ€" nesday halfâ€"holiday the year round. Early this week they had a conferâ€" ence and decided they would elose voluntarily this week and next and then the byâ€"law would be in foree and effect from then on. Ansara‘s store, which commenced on Saturday last, is meeting with much success, Lnge numbers being attractâ€" ed by the striking values offered. ()\\mfl' to the recent death of Mr. N. Ansam. it has been found necessary to materially reduce the big stocks of general dry goods on hand, and the firm has taken the right way to do this in making s\xeepmg reductions in prices and advertising the bargains offered, On Tuesday morning at about halfâ€" past ten the police had a call to the corner of Sixth avenue and Maple street, where a man was reported as having killed himself by chopping his own head with an axe. Hurrying to the seene the police found Joe Markiâ€" vitech, a big and heavyâ€"built foreigner lying in a woodshed, with blood spatâ€" tered all around him. He had an axe in his hand and with this he was hitting himself on the head. When the police arrived the big fellow was weak from loss of blood that he had passed the stage where he could do himself much harm, but still he was doing the best he could,â€" choppng at his head with feeble strokes with the axe. Officer Pearee and Mr. R. Allen quickly disarmed Markoviteh and took him at once to the Proviâ€" denee Hospital to have his wounds _dressed. He had several cuts on his head, one particularly bad one on the top of his head requiring several stitches to close the wound. One of his eyes was also badly bunged up, apparently from a glancing blow from the blunt side of the head of the axe. He had come close to knocking the eye out altogether. There were also a couple of little slices taken from the side of his head. .There were five men standing around when the police arrived, but all of them had apparentâ€" ly been afraid to interfere with the selfâ€"chopper, the big fellow with the| axe no doubt looking like an uncomâ€" fortable man to bother. The main will recover from the injuries reâ€" ceived, but is still in the hospital under guard. _ He will be charged with attempting to commit suicide, this charge being laid against him on Tueeday when he was taken in charge. < It is said that the man has been drinking lately and also that for some two or three weeks past he has been acting peculiarly. A man who will lie on his back and chop at his own kead with an axe must have a queer sense of humour at the least. STOCKâ€"REDUCING SALE AT N.
