The sentence and the rebuke administered to the offender by the magistrate should act as a warning and a deterrent to any others who may be temptéd to illâ€"use any animal at any time. In this, its first actual police court case, the Huâ€" mane Society has done well in ‘‘speaking for th()se who can not speak for themselves. A big rummage sale is announced to be held in the Gordon block, in the store formerly ocecupied by Rinn Bros., on Friday, October 15th. The sale will be held under the auspices of the Ladies of the new R. C. church. There will be a big supply of attracâ€" The special case of the day was one charging Mike Bruski with cruelty to animals. The charge was laid by the Timmins Humane Society, Inspector J. Mackinnon preferring the charge. The evidence showed that a sick cow had been lying on the roadside and Bruski came along to move the cow. Although the cow was evidently too sick to move, bloated up and generâ€" ally in hmnhlo condition, Bmsl 18 said to have put a rope round its neck and pulled it foreibly along, belting it with the end of the rope. The cow was badly bruised and marked when the Humane Society officials mderod it whot.~ Bruski admitted "‘tapping‘‘ the cow lightly with the end of the rope, the statements in this regard making the magistrate _ comment ironically. Dr. Knox gave very clear and useful evidence as to the condiâ€" tion of the cow, its injuries, and the probable causes. _ There was ample evidence from those seeing the cow abused to warrant a conviction.. The magistrate scored the accused for his cruelty and him to sixty days in jail without the option of fine.
