PRIVY GOUNCHL OEGIDES T. N.D. MAY ENTER QUEBEG Highest Court in the Empire Supâ€" ports Finding of Supreme Court of Canada,. Ontario May Not Build Line Now This week cables from London, England, told of the decision by the Privy Council confirming the finding of the Supreme Court of Canada that the Nipissing (Central (a subsidiary of the T.N.O0.) had the right to enter Quebec Crown lands to conâ€" stract a line to Rouyn under a Doâ€" minion charter. As a sort of humorâ€" ous commentary on this decision is the report that Ontario does not now intend to construct the proposed line to Rouyn. The despatch from Lonâ€" don, England, telling of the finding ‘of the Privy Council is as follows:â€" ‘©The appeal was taken by the proâ€" vince of Quebec against the decision the Canadian supreme court that ‘the Nipissing Central Railway Comâ€" pany had the right to occupy crown lands in Quebee for the purpose of sconstructing a branch line into the Rouyn gold fields. The attorneyâ€" general of Canada was joined in the issue, which involved an important constitutional question. *The appeal in the case of the Atâ€" torneyâ€"Gieneral of Quebee vs. the Nipissing Central Railway Company was dismissed on Monday with costs by the judicial committee of the Privy Council. The appeal was taken by the Province of Quebec against the decision of the Supreme Court of Caâ€" nada that the Nipissing Central Railâ€" way Company had the right to occupy crown lands in Quebec for, the purâ€" pose of constructing a branch line inâ€" to the Rouyn gold fields. The attorâ€" neyâ€"general of Canada was joined in the issue, which involved an imporâ€" tant constitutional question. The present season of the Caledoâ€" nian Society of Timmins will elose with a Grand Caledonian Ball to be held in the Hollinger Recreation Hall on Friday evening of next week, May 28th. Usually, the closing evening has been a social evening, but this year it was decided some time ago to have it in the form of a Grand Caleâ€" donian Ball. That the event will be an enjoyable and successful one is a foregone conclusion. It will be for members of the Society and their friends only, and tickets are now on sale for the occasion. Tickets may be secured from members of the exeâ€" «utive or from the ladies‘ committee. It was intended‘ to have a dance on Friday of this week, May 21st, but arrangements for this were not posâ€" sthle, and so it was decided to centre on next week‘s event and make the Grand Caledonian Ball on Friday evening, May 28th, acbig and partiâ€" cularly memorable oceasion and a fitâ€" ting. close for a very successful and enjoyable season under the presidenâ€" cy of Mr. W. It was against this judgment that the proâ€" vince of Quebec appealed to the privy council. ‘‘The judicial committee of the privy council in its judgment toâ€"day upheld the decision of the Canadian supreme court and ruled against the contention of the province of Quebec that section 189 was not constitutionâ€" AUCTION SALE OF HOMESTEAD PROPERTY ‘The province of Quebee contendâ€" ed that section 189 of the dominion railway act, under which the Nipisâ€" sing Central Railway Company was given power to cross Quebee erown lands, was unconstitutional. GRAND CALEDONIAN BALL FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 28 EUCHRE AT SCHUMACHER THURSDAY NIGHT, JUNE 3 A Euchre, Five Hundred and Bridge will be held on Thursday evenâ€" ing, June 3rd, in the Melntyre Reâ€" creation Hall, under the auspices of the Ladies Altar Society, Schumacher. There will be good music, good prizes, good refreshments and an allâ€"round good time at this event, Do not miss this‘ PQOR SENSE SHOWN BY SOME IN USE OF FIRECRACKERS / There is a byâ€"law in town prohibitâ€" ing the settingâ€"off of firecrackers in public places. The police have never shown any meanness in enforcing this byâ€"law, but have allowed the boys considerable latitude. Around the 24th of May, for instance, and near Dominion Day, the use of fireworks of various kinds had gone unhindered. ‘This is all right, but the boys must do their part also. Long before the twentyâ€"fourth of May this year the boys have been settingâ€"off firecracâ€" kers, and the authorities have not inâ€" terfered. But evidently the boys are training for a fall, and for such a reversal of public opinion that for a time fireworks of all kinds may be banned The boys (and some of them mighty big boys) have not been showing much good sense or good sportsmenship. ~They have been setâ€" tingâ€"off firecrackers in all sorts of places, sometimes near inflammable material where a serious fire might be caused. _ One of their common. practices is to throw the lighted fireâ€" works at the heels of unsuspecting women and men. â€" Tragedy is only too liable to result from such idiocy. The shock to a delicate woman or to A man with an affected heart is liable to be serious indeed when one of these pesky firecrackers explodes without warning. The ‘boys should face the serious situation they are likely to encounter if they persist in this selfâ€" ish and senseless trick of throwing lighted firecrackers around. If the boys would only stop to think they would be appalled at the risk taken in this foolish and foolhardy practice. Surely none of these boys would care to destroy the elothing of passersby or to cause the collapse, perhaps the sudden death, of someone through shock. The best that may happen to the boys is that the privilege of usâ€" ing firecrackers be taken away altoâ€" gether. The alternative, of course, is for the boys themselves to stop the desperately dangerous practice of throwing fireworks around under any mistaken idea of fun or mischief, Several bush fires are reported as raging in Algoma district at present. 0000000000000‘. o is 1i 29 29 ie d Pnd ne t n d na t ndtnd n 0000000000000000000000000000303000000.00 00000oonooooooooooooooo00o00000000000000030000000300000000000003000000000000000000 o 54* AT THE THEATRES returns to the screen in his greatest production A tremendous drama blazing the trail of love and civilization o DIRECT FROM ONE YEAR‘S RUN ON BROADWAY WILD BILL HICKOCK and Se BUFFALO BILL in their old time glory.
