THURSDAY, MARCH lith, 1926 Apart from serious objecfion to some of the campaign literature and canvassing arguments, there were reâ€" ports after the election of illegalities, it being charged. that conveyances were "unlawfully. hired, canvassing carried on in the immediate vicinity of the polling booths, and cards bearâ€" ing names of: certain candidates im properly distributed on polling day, but to avoid the loss and cost of furâ€" ther election â€"proceedings these matâ€" ters were not followed up. It was recognized that the chief reason for the success of certain candidates was the superior organization and the personal popularity ‘of some of the candidates. Accordingly the. ten: dency was to follow the advice of a former town councillor of Timmins And ‘‘let her go as she looks.‘‘ There may be matters of which the law must take cognizance, but so far as proâ€" itests are concerned it appears that the. ‘town has had enough, and what is meeded now is ‘a refurn te, harmonâ€" ‘ious work for the town. The town‘s | ‘business must be carried on, and the | town ‘s interest should be held supl,'em(?l ¢ » by all, v . 4 84 A SPENDING OF ANY MONEY. The résult of the municipal elecâ€" tlons on Fnday last came as A deâ€" cided surprise to most people who have been following municipal affairs closely. Those who pretend: that there has been a great upheaval in pubhc opinion in regard to a change in the management of town affairs are speaking in disregard of the facts. The closeness of the vote disproves any such theory. The small majority in an unusuallv larg vote shows that opinion .is divided. in ‘the matter. There is reason to believe that clever organizgation on the one hand and lack . of concerted effort on the other hand contributed chiefly to the result. . Of _ course, the great personal popularity and general esteem enjoyed by men like Dr. Brennan and Dr. Joyal also had undoubted effect on public opinâ€" ion. In any, event there appears to be a good Council for 1926, and if the work is carried on a:rmcably and withâ€" out prejudice, the 1926 Council will prove as good a council as its preâ€" decessors. It is unfortunate that the town is split into two factions of | about equal strength. â€" If the Council carries on with a similar division, the result can not be\ satlsfactory to the town. Business carried on in effect by the casting vote of the Mayor would not be representative governâ€" ‘*ment, but rather, one man rule. It is to be hoped that the 1926 Council will be able to avoid any. such undesirâ€"| able general situation, and that the work may bhe carried on for the best' interests of the town. Although the quartz vein type hasâ€" yielded many spectacuâ€" lar samples and discoveries, it has so far failed to produce any deposits of real value, with the one possible exâ€" ception of the veins on the property About seven miles northwest of the Horne is the Waiteâ€"Montgomery, anâ€" other property that seems likely to be of great value. The ore body was discovened in the sgpring of 1925, and. during the summer was exploited by surface tfrenching only. Drilling was commenced at the beginning of winâ€" _ter, but the results have not yet been ‘made public. ‘The ore is a solid mass of mixed sulphides of copper, iron ~and zinec, and average 17 per cent. ‘eopper at the surface.: It forms a flat sheet of thickness yvet unknown. â€" The Amulet Flaims lHie about two miles south of the Waiteâ€"Montgomery A number of small bodies of copper ore â€"have already been found on it, and the chances are that a discovery of importance may yet be made.. A number of other discoveries of copper have also been reported since the ‘writer‘s visit to the district in September, but no definite informaâ€" tion as to their value in available. The gold situation is of less outâ€" standing promise. Although numerâ€" ous discoveries were reported in 1923 and 1924, most of them on investigaâ€" tion have proved to be too small, too spetty or top low in grade to be minâ€" ed at a profit. The gold veins are of two general types: quantz veins carryâ€" _‘_..‘- ons ces ho “A"\l‘l sns hok t +cï¬ sale 9 Sn M on o On the Horne property a force of about a hundred â€"men has been emâ€" ployed and work has proceeded rapidâ€" ly. ~The property has been entirely cleared of bush, andâ€"suitable mine buildings erected. â€" Plans for the erecâ€" tion of the first 500â€"ton unit of a smelter.are well under way, and conâ€" struction will begin as soon as the railway now building can bring in the necessary materials, _ . Two shafts about a thousand feet.apart have been put down, the deepest 328 feet, and the lateral working have blocked out ‘bodies of ore valued according to the company‘s statements: at more than twenty million dollars. as ever, and by no means : without favourable results, the copper disâ€" ‘coveries have ‘been so imposing that public attention has focussed on them almost to the exclusion of the other. This was not so evident a year ago, ‘Aas the first copper deposits found, on the Horne claims, contain enough gold to be ores even without the copper values; in the later discoveries, howâ€" ever, the amount of gold is small and. copper the main constituent of value. The most spectacular development of the <past year is the manner in which copper has taken the centre of the stage. Although the search for gold is still prosecuted as vigorously as yet fit only for winter u till sufficiency of the heavier supplies can be brought in at this season to carry on work during the entire year. In addition more efficient motor boat and aeroplane services have been estabâ€" lighed, whereby the necessary supplies of more perishable goods and of mien can be rapidly brought in to almost any part.. Still further improvement in this regard will take place in the near future, as a railway is now under. construction from O‘Brien station on the Canadian National railway into Rouyn township. The year 1925 has seen an astonishâ€" ingly rapid development of mining in Quebec.. The discoveries of previous years have, according to Dr. H. C. Cooke of the Geological Survey of Canada, been developed and tested more or less thoroughly, and though many have fallen by the wayside others have proved of unsuspected value. To this apparently sudden deâ€" velopment, many factors have conâ€" tributed, chief of which is the imâ€" provement that has been made in transportation during the past two years Roads have been cut to conâ€" nect various parts of the area with the railroads to the north, south, east and west.
