There they were cordially welâ€" in his brief address at the formal opening ceremony, @®wonderful‘‘ is the only word that will deseribe it. The visitors were also impressed parâ€" ticularly with two other points in conâ€" nection with the event. One was the geperous attitude of the Abitibr Co. in planning the new hospital for the general use of the whole district. The other was the kind hospitality extendâ€" ed to all,the visitors and the very eviâ€" dent desire of everybhody to do everyâ€" thing possible to make the visit a pleasantly memorable one. Dr, W. E. The Abitibi Power Paper Co. and the Town of Iroquois Falls made it an interesting and impressive event in keeping with the importance of the new institution to the district at large. In addition to the people from Ivoquois Falls and immediate district there were many from more distant points. Ircluding in the list of visiâ€" tors for the oceasion were:â€" The visitors were greatly impressâ€" ed with the wonderful new hospital. As Mr. Alex. White, of Toronto, said OPENING OF THE ANSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AT IROQUOIS FALLS It was Her Excellency the Lady Byng of Vimy who made this stateâ€" ment recently at a luncheon of the Ottawa Women‘s Canadian â€" Club shortly after her return from a trip across and through Canada over a matter of some eighty thousand miles,. Accompanying His Excellency the Governor General, Lady Byn had visited practically all parts o Canada meeting at every stopping place the warm welcome Canadians everywhere reserve for ‘"Byng of Vimy" and his charming Lady and, not less important, becoming acâ€" quainted with Canada‘s unrivalled and neverâ€"ending succession of sceaic glories. "I I have some plea to come to ?eak to you on Canada",said Her xcellency. "I come as a sort of adâ€" vertising agent to beg of you that you go west and visit there. I know the terrible question of expense but “No one has any right to speak with authority of Canada who has seen only the East or the West." _ Lord Byng golfing on the famous TIMMINS, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11th, 1926 Lady Byng Inspired by Rockies An Epoch in the History of the District of Cochrane. Hospital Equipped in Most Upâ€"toâ€"date Way is Open to Whole District. Interesting Event in Connection with Official Opening of New Institution on Friday Last. comed and shown through the buildâ€" ing, there being a large number of efficient and capable guides giving very courteous and helpful service along this linc. Then â€"refreshments were served to the visitors, while the townspeople@®inspected the new hosâ€" pital. Mr. R. A. Melnnis, after a pleasâ€" ing welcome to the visitors, referred to th fitting of the hospital as a memâ€" orial to the late Mr. F. H. Anson. It had been Mr. Anson‘s great wish to see proper hogpital accommodation to meet the needs of all the district, and this wish had met the fullâ€"heartâ€" ed support of his successor as presiâ€" dent of the Abitibi Co., Mr. Alexâ€" ander Smith, who‘made it his especiar care to see that the hospital idea was carried through. ‘‘This hospital beâ€" longs as much to the whole District of Cochrane as to the people of Iroâ€" quois Falls, but of course we will see to it that our. own people are well looked after in it,"" ssaid Mr. MelInnis. Mr. McInnis also paid tribute to Mr. Thomas Mills, who built the hospital and who was responsible for every step in its erection. The applause that greeted Mr. McInnis‘ tribute showed that townspeople and visitors alike seeing the beauty and finish of the completed structure agreed very heartily with the chairman‘s words of appreciation.â€" Mr. Geo. W. Lee, Chairman of the T. N. O0., spoke most interestingly of his early knowledge of Iroquois general manager of the Abitibi Co., was chairman of the meeting, and among those on the platform were: Mayor Drinkwater, of Cochrane; ‘hairman (Geo. W. Lee and Commisâ€" siconers L. T. Martin and Col. Macâ€" Laren, of the T. N. 0. Railway; Dr. Geoxge, North Bay, District Repreâ€" sentative of the Dept of Health of Ontario; Mr. Alex. White, Toronto, representing the Division of Indusâ€" trial Hygiene; and Dr. H. Martland Young, superintendent of the new hosâ€" pital. The meeting for the formal handâ€" ing over of the keys to the new hcisâ€" pital was held in the Parish Hall. A very pleasing orechestra furnished very attractive music. Mr. R. A. Melnnis, In our Dominion different localities have different interests and problems, ard nothing but a close and symâ€" wider impetus. The iqea of interchanging visits east and west is developing the attitude so admirably taken by the wite of the Governorâ€"General should ‘"‘There are those," said Lady Byng, "who visit Canada landing at Quebec, coming on to Montreal, proceeding to Ottawa, and Toronto, who have gone away giving their view on Canada. Such views are always defective even if sometimes they are not wholly unfair andâ€"unjust. Canada‘s bigness is evident on the map, but its actual size is only realized through direct contact and acquaintanceship.‘" The opinion of Her Excellency regarding Western Canada is not that of a mere passerby. With the Govâ€" ernorâ€"General she has been all over the country, going by motor where the rail and river do not penetrate. the movement and give it ‘*‘Truly a wonderful hospital.‘" said Mr. Alex., White, who also spoke of the good work for the people accomâ€" plished by the Abitibi Co. Touching on the yvalue of a doctor in a communiâ€" ty like the Falls, Mr. White pointed out that the doctor‘s duty did not rest at healing disease, but his best efforts were really given to preventâ€" ing accidents and warding off disease, illustrating the point by saying that a master mechanic gave his machines such constant care that they were never ill butâ€" always in the best of working order. Falls. He also paid due honour to the memory of his friend, the late Mr. F. H. Anson, ‘‘ _ a man of great vision.â€"a man in a thousand.‘" In the present president, Mr. Alexander Smith, Mr. Lee also saw a man. of grat talent and breadth of mind, and he Gelieved the future of the indusâ€" try and the district safe in such capâ€" able and edrnest hands. Speaking of the new hospital, Mr. Lee said that though cities like Toronto might boast of biggeér buildings, they could pride themselves on none more empletely ecqiupped. ‘‘This hospital is the mont fitting tribute to the memory of the greatest man the North has known,” said Mr. Lee. The T. N. 0. Comâ€" mission, he concluded, were anxious to have some part in the work, and so would like to present a radio set to the nurses. ‘""I think T can get that through, even if there is a Scotsman on the Commission,"‘ said Mir. Lee amid laughter. # Col. Martin, of the T. N. 0. Comâ€" mission, touched on the contribution made by the Abitibi Co. to the growth of the district. They had founded a great industry and this had brought other development in the district. The \Company had shown great pubâ€" lieâ€"spirit, and he believed that the opening of the new Anson Memorial (General Hospital would be of greatâ€" er farâ€"reaching effect: and benefit than realized toâ€"day. Mayor James Drinkwater, of Cochâ€" rane, complimented the town and disâ€" trict on the magmnificent hospital proâ€" vided. His humorous sallies were alâ€" so much enjoyed. Dr. George explained that Hon. The lesson of Lady Byng‘s speech, then, is for Canadians, when they go travelling on holiday, to extend their knowledge of the structure and economie life of the people in other parts of the country than their own and to see for themselves the beauty of Canadian scenery which travellers from other lands say is unexcelled the world over and of which every province has its full share â€" see Canada first, and see it from Halifaz to Victoria. pathetic study of cause and effect will solve the difficulties which confront the country as a whole. Books and newspapers assist somewhat in bringâ€" ing into closer touch the eastern, central and western regions of the Dominion. But not until the people living east visit the west and the people in the west visit the older rovinces â€" visit them with the intention of becoming acquainted with the life and ideals of the native born, will any degree of intimacy or understanding be reached. . Her Excellency, Lady Byng coming forward to reply Dr. 'Young was greeted with round after round of applause. He spoke briefly but very effectively outlining the !duties and the responsibilities that rest upon the board of governors and the staff of an hospital. He thanked the staff for the wholeâ€"hearted coâ€" operation given in getting the hospital ready to open. He emphasized the fact that prevention is always better than cure, and touched on the ways in which the hospital and medical men and numrses can benefit the pubâ€" lis by advancing corrective and preâ€" ventive measures. ‘‘It shall be my endeavour,‘‘ he concluded, ‘‘and I speak for the staff as well, to further the interests of this community in every way, and make the hospital not only for the care of the sick, but also for correction and prevention.‘‘ Meets every third Monday of cach month in the basement of St. Matâ€" thew‘s Church.
