Recently the report was heard with general incredulity that the Hunter Mine at Poreupine had been sold at a tax sale and possession secured by a prominent mining man. Following this report came another that was more in line with the history of the Hunter property. This second report was to the effect that so soon as the oldâ€"time owner of the property heard of the tax sale, the arrears in taxes were paid and the property redeemed, This means that the Hunter interests retain the Hunter property as in the past. There was a reward of $5,000.00 for the capture of Harry Franklin, and the two fireâ€"rangers concerned must have felt sad when they saw the chances for this money fade away. After it had been decidâ€" ed that the man at North Bay and the man, Harry Franklin, were not the same, there were still people not convinced. Now, however, everybody has to be convined that Harry Fairâ€" banks was not Harry Franlgin. The real Harry Franklin has beeén arrestâ€" ed and jailed. and last week was tried at Schenectady, N. Y. He confessed to kidnapping, and a sentence of not less than ten years, not more than fifty, was imposed upon him for the crime. In June of this year there was considerable interest in the North Land and much excitement in New York when a man giving the name of Harry Fairbanks, but known by other aliases, was arrested at Hearst, and charged with the murder of Wasy] Maximo, a C. N. R. watchman. The two rangers who arrested him were of the opinion that the man they had captured was Harry Franklin, who was wanted in connection with the kidnapping of F. W. Alexanderson, noted United States electrical enginâ€" eer. For a time the excitement was great in New York, but it was evenâ€" tually established that the man held at North Bay was not the man so badly wanted by the New York authorities. There was a good attendance and all attending found the evening a pleasing one. The music for the occeasion «was supplied by Bridge‘s Orchestra. â€" Refreskments were served during the evening. In addition to the modern dances, there were several Old Land dances. The meeting was formally opened by the President Mr. W. D. Watt, and on motion al business was deferred until the next meeting, to make way for the dancing of the evening. In addition to the members, there were many visitors present for the open dance. The proâ€" ceeds of the event will go to the fund for the Christmas Tree for the childâ€" ren of the Society. The Ladies‘ Comâ€" mittee, Mrs A. Roberts, convenor, had charge of the evening, and carried it through to success. The event will be held in the (Goldfields Theatre, after the church services, and under the auspices of the Timmins Citizens‘ Band. It is intended later to have a special ‘‘Seottish‘‘ night, a ‘‘French‘‘ Night and other tional‘‘ music nights. Ti WOMEN‘S MISSION CIRCLE OPF THE BAPTIST CHUKCH DEC. 20TH TOâ€"BE CORNISH NIGHT AT BAND CONCERT The preliminary steps have been taken to organize in Timmins a Socieâ€" ty for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Timmins branch is to be affiliated with the Provincial Soâ€" ciety and the charter for the local branch is expected here in a few deys. There was a meeting of some of those interested, held in the Council Chamâ€" ber on Frldnv evening of last week. It was decided by this meeting that the gathering was not darge enough or representative enough to warrant the election of permanent officers. A meeting for the regular organizaâ€" tion will accordingly be called in the next week or so when officers will be elected and the work of the Society duly started. In the meantime Mrs. J. A. Meluonms was appointed Presiâ€" dent pro tem, and Mrs. Bolster, secreâ€" tary pro tem. A committee was also selected to canvass for members, adGIETY FOR PREVENTION OF GRUELTY TO ANIMALS MR. H. F. SCHROEDER LEADER OF KIRKLAND ORCHESTRA. Kirkland Lake‘s new band is now organized, and there is also an orchâ€" estra in connection. In reference to the matter the last issue of The Norâ€" thern News has the following on the Kirkland Lake page, the *‘*C. F. Schroeder‘‘ in each case referring no doubt to Mr. H. F. Schroeder, for a number of years conduction a conâ€" servatory of music at Timm!ins, and recently moving to Kirkland Lake:â€" Some weeks ago, in response to a reference in The Advance, a letter signed ‘‘Klansman‘‘ was received saying that the Ku Klux Klan in Canada did not approve any lawlessâ€" ness. _‘‘The law of Canada is the law of the Klan,‘‘ said the letter. It was suggested that whatever the Ku Klux Klan might have done elsewhere, the Ku Klux Klan in Canada was law aâ€" biding. Similar _ statements were made last week to a Toronto newsâ€" paper by Mr. J. H. Hawkins, Imperial Klaliff and Chief of Staff of the Ku Klux Klan of the British Empire. Part of Mr. Hawkins‘ letter reads as follows:â€"‘‘As acting head of the Ku Klux Klan of the British Empire, the writer agrees with Mr. Armour‘s statement and any local Klan or body of Klansmen belonging to this organization who would attempt to take the law in their own hands, as stated in these two cases, would not only find themselves expelled from the Ku Klux Klan of the British Emâ€" pire, but their names turned over to the proper legal authorities and every assistance would be rendered by this organization in punishing them. ‘‘No Klansman will ever protect a member who violates the laws of Canada as it is a violation of his oath as a Klansman and he would forfeit all rights to membership in the Klan."" AND THE WIFE ALSO SENT A TELEGRAM ON HER OWN. This is to be blamed on The Ottawa J ournal :â€" An Ottawa man was hunting deer up north early this week. He shot a big moose, and, elated, he rushed to the nearest telegraph office and wired to his wife: ‘‘I‘ve got one, weighs three hunâ€" dred pounds and it is a beauty."‘ This was the answer he got: SsSAYS KLAN IS ABSOLUTELY AGAINST ALL LA ‘‘I‘ve got one, weighs three hunâ€" dred pounds and it is a beauty."‘ This was the answer he got: ‘‘So have I, weighs ten pounds.
