Timmins : Orientals, the Maccabees, the Ledy Maccabees, the .Order of the . Moose, In. the line of fraternal socgeties, ]Timmins now has an imposing list. |The orders represented here include: â€"|â€"The Masons, Royal Arch Chapter, > 1.0.0.F.;, Eastern â€" Star, the Rebekahs, the Orientals, the Lady what may be termed the muniâ€" cipal line seven or eight bodies are functioning here. These include the Town Council. {including its various committees), _ Timmins Board. of Trade, Public School Board, Separate Sehool Board, High School Board, Public Library Board, Board of Health, Timmins Fire Brigade, and the Police PForce. There was also, some years ago a Ratepayers‘ Associâ€" ation that never formally disbanded. Of course, everybody is not urged to. join these bodies. Sometimes there are applicants who are turned down + On several occasions receutly someâ€" one has made a remark along the line that Timmins is well provided with clubs, societies, and organizations of every kind. Just how true this is will be apparent as soon as, an attempt is made to list them. As soon as a list is apparently completed it is found that threb or more other socieâ€" ties or clubs have been inadvertently omitted. Herewith is given a list of some of the organizations in more or less active existence in Timmins.. It is recognized that this ligt is very proâ€" bably incomplete.. No doubt a half a dozen other organizations could be added. There is a common â€" saying that this or that man «of ‘(woman *joins everything that comes along.‘‘ If anyone in (Timmins were to atâ€" tempt to do this, he or she would need to quit all other business and secure ‘an extension of the lease of life to atâ€" tend them all, and at that it would be necessary for the said he or she to be twins and divide the responsibility. The ~earliest organizations here were along municipal, fraternal, reâ€" ligious and sporting lines. ~At first only the organizations well known in ’othef districts were established here, but more recently the list here has grown in all lines and toâ€"day includes mahy tions:; Maccabees, the Order of the . Moose, the L.O.L., ‘the O.Y.B., the Lady OQOrange Lodge, the Knights of: Columâ€" bus, the Squires, and, though not now iactive, the Elks. Sixteen of them. In religious organizations there are the several church bodies and their auxiliaries.. The latter are perhaps too many to enumerate. However, it ma.y be noted thatâ€" practlcally every ‘church body has a branch for women ‘s auxiliary work, for Sunday School work, for m'18810nary work, and for "chanty and relief, All these organiâ€" zations work well. Among the religi< ‘ous bodies here are:â€"the Roma ‘Catholie Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Anglican Church, the Baptlst Church, the Hebrew Syna- gogue, the Chnstlan Science Church, the International Bible Students ind e Salvation Army Eight . of them not to mention their auxiligaries. Among the latter may be noted:â€"The Ladies of Charity and the Altar Girls‘ Society, of the R. C. Church; the Ladies‘ ‘Aid and the W.M.S., ‘of the. Presbyterian Church (now the United : Church) the Women‘s Aunxiliary, the Girls‘ Auxlhary and the Altar Girls‘ Guild, of St., Matthew‘s Church At the Presbytenan Chureh there is the: El Shadi Bible Class, with a large mem bershlp There are ~eight auxiliary societies mentioned" in regard to the churches, with similiar ‘organizations ‘at the Baptist Church and at the Salâ€" vation Army. As‘the sale bills say space will not permit of a full list. But join any church and you can also. join quite a few inner organizations. on the ballot, just as in fraternal and other societies. h ; Mn B t unusual or orlgmal orgamza- â€"In the line of societies that have social, fraternal and community feaâ€" tures, thgre is a long list that ean not be very definitely classified under one particular heading. . These. include the Caledonian Society, the Hollinger Recreation Club, the A.S.D. Club, the Kiwanis, the Klwanees, the Fn'emen o Club, the Lancashire Club, the Ramâ€" blers‘ Club, the S.[V. E. Including the. Timmins Amaâ€" teur Athletie Association and â€"the Dog Race, there are at least twenty separate and distinct organizations looking after the sporting lactivities of the town, counting, of course, the organizations of the various clubs in the various leagues of the various lines of sports here. A new organization . for Timmins was perfected recently when the Asâ€" sociated Charities of Timmins was formed to secure the coâ€"operation of the many charitable societies and orâ€" Patriotic organizations might be a good title for organizations like the I.O,.D.E., the Navy League and the Town and District Children‘s Aid Soâ€" cieties, all active existence in Timâ€" mins. , . In junior organizations, mention should be made of the C.G.I.T., the Tuxis, the Trailrangers, the Boy Scouts, the Cadets, and the Girls‘ Own Club, all active and useful here. This continent is rather prone to beâ€" ieve that here was invented the great art of publicity and freak advertisâ€" ing. But this‘is not the case. ‘There is nothing new under the sun in this line. ‘The London (England) Mormnâ€" ing Post proves|this in the followmg item in a recent issuge:â€" music, a good time for all attending, Tickets pow being sold by members of the two clubs. concerned. EVEN FREAK PUBLICITY NOT INVENTED RECENTRY Mr. Van Butchell, also an adverâ€" tiser in the Morning Post a hundred and fifty years ago describes himself as ‘‘Mender of Mankind in a manly way.‘‘ He was one of the first to use what are now known as ‘‘advertisâ€" ing slogans.‘‘ One usually placed at the end of his annoyncements ran: ‘‘Patients come to melâ€"between ten and one: butâ€"Iâ€"goâ€"toâ€"none.‘‘ ganizations in town so as to prevent overlapping and abusé of relief work. â€"In the matter of music, all the churches have their choirs, duly orâ€" ganized, in addition there is the Timmins Citizens‘ Band, the Timmins Male Chorus and the Caledonian Choir, not to mention the many orâ€" chestras all well organized. He was a man of great delicacy of féeling. When his wife died he had her smbalmed, and used to lef patiâ€" ents see the body. : He was hurt by a report which got about that strangers were admitted to view his deceased helpmate and thus dentes this culumâ€" ny in October. 1776:; â€" s Van Butchell*(not wishing to be unpleasantly cireumstanced, and wishâ€" ing to convince some good Minds they have been misinformed) acquaints the Curious that no Stranger can see his embalmed Wife unless (by a Friend or personally) introduced to himself, any Day between Nine and One, Sundays excepted.‘‘â€" In a class by themselves may be noted the Timmins Horticultural Soâ€" ciety and the Porcupine Poultry and Pet Stock Association, both striving to do a good work for the town and district. ~ T.
