"Can Anything be Done?" is the Question Asked. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO One of the valued oldâ€"time readers of The Advanceâ€" has written â€"this paper regarding the discouragements suffered by those who wish to have the town appear beautiful and upâ€" toâ€"date. Seores of property owners and tenants have been spending time and money to better conditions, and in too many cases their efforts have been offset by the indifference and lack of regard of others, Every citizen should read the letter of ‘‘A Property Owner.‘‘ The letter, inâ€" deed, should not only be read but it should be heeded. All should make an effort to improve conditions to the greatest possible extent. The man who affronts his neighbour by using the front lawn for a laundry display or to advertise his garbage cans or cordwood is not playing the part of a good citizen or a good sport. Further, he is injuring his own comâ€" fort and depreciating his own propâ€" erty, as well as belittling that of his neighbhour. Back yards are designed to accomodate the washings and the cordwood and the garbage cans. It is worth while even to go to extra trouble to see that proper use is made of the back yards, so that the front lawns may not be an offence and an affront to all. All good citizens and all good sports are urged to read and heed the following letter from *‘ A Property â€" Owner.‘‘ A in an article appearing in the issue of your paper of May 27th, dealing with the beautifying of our streets by planting of, trees, ete. The idea is to be commended, and, as you are aware, a great number of property owners in this town have been workâ€" ing along these lines for a number of vears with most pleasing results. . As one walks the streets, one sees creater activity now than in previous vears, ornamental fences being erecâ€" ted, lawns being built and seeded trees, shrubs and flowers planted, which is making formation. In many cases real hard. backâ€" breaking labour has been necessary to gain these results, especially where the ground has had to be built up to make anything like a decent lawn. I am striving along these lines, and in the midst,of this toil I someâ€" times think: What is the use? Beâ€" cause when I look across the street, the first object to catch the eye is a garbage ean within a few feet of the sxde\\alk, a pile of _ cordwood, and lines of washing hanging out where P.D.F.L, MATCHES IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS The following are nearby games in the P.D.E.L,. series, the firstâ€"named team in each case being the home team :â€" Wednesday, July 1â€"Dome Mines vs. Town B. BEAR MAULS AND TEARS WIDDIFIELD MAN TO DEATH were ripped from shoulder to waist. His abdomen was slashed open by the powerful claws of the beast. After killing the man, the bear and cubs disappeared.. Parties at once were organized to track «down . and kill the bear. When Genereaux failed to return home, search was made for him and he was found by a neighbour lying dead in a pool of | bhlood upon the floor of the old house. Eugene (Genereaux, a Widdifield farmer, 38 years of age, was found dead last week in an old house about half a mile from his home. He was badly battered and bitten and maulâ€" ed evidently by a bear. So far as the story of the fatality can be reâ€" constructed, it would appear that the man found traces of bear cubs around the old house and attempted to ecapture the cubs. While he was at this, the mother of the cubs came on the _ scene. Probably she got beâ€" tween and the door and made his escape impossible. He had no weapon to defend himself with except a shortâ€"handled spade. The shaft of the spade was snapped across as if the bear had bitten it in two. (Genereaut‘s left hand was bitten off at the wrist. His clothes Timmins, June 20th, 1925. Editor, The Advance, Timmins, Ont. Walking along the thoroughfare, one is struck with the almost general activity of fenceâ€"erecting and lawnâ€" making by the property owners,â€"all ‘*doing their bit‘‘ to improve the appearance of their property and the town in general. I say ‘‘almost,"‘ for, as you will snmetlmes find in a beautiful flower garden plants with blemishes which may lyive been overâ€" looked in the “\\ee,ding,” so _ you will find a "‘simile"‘ as you walk aâ€" long this thoroughfare. Jn (On one property where the frameâ€" work for a fence has been built out to the sidewalk, but never finished, the reason for the extension is obviâ€" ous, the extension of the clothes lines apparently being the reason, the change being made by moving the line pole on to what was, I believe, Town or Government property, (the strip between the lot line and the sidewalk. Continuing one‘s walk, the next eyesore is a line or two of washing on a front verandah, and further along (an elevating sight for the tourists) is a pile of logs and sawed wood, with one or more garbage cans within a few feet of the sidewalk as an added attraction, and nearby two more verandahs were built with the same idea. tourists) is a pile wood, with one or within a few feet Further along, as an added attracâ€" tion for the tourist, is shown the imâ€" plements of torture used on Wash Dayâ€"bath tubs, boiler, etc., etc.,â€" which are on view, ladies and gentleâ€" men, any time during the day and night, all hanging on the front of the residence. All these sights may be seen on one of the pr1nc1pal thorov"hfales of Timmins. ‘‘A man‘s house is his castle!" I presume that, he may do just as he pleases as long as he in nd way vioâ€" lates the law. If there is a law â€" to take care of these points it is a pity that "‘the powers that be‘‘ do not awake to the fact. I do not know of any â€" selfâ€"respecting â€"community â€" in any town or city that would tolerate the conditions mentioned above. Mr. Assessor advises us that real estate is increasing in value in Timâ€" mins by leaps and bounds. Thée heavy burden of taxation makes us almost believe. his statement to be true. But try and sell a property on a street with conditions as quoted above, and you will find that values are decreasing (practically) _ more than increasing mythically as we are advised.
