Office 26. SURE LOOKS LIKE SMALL POTATOES AND FEW IN A HILL A Timmins firm last week received in one day‘s mail a letter enclosed in an envelope of rivh paper and texture and ‘bearing the embossed seal of the Dominion House of Commons. There was no postage stamp on the enveâ€" lope, the letter being evidently posted at the House of Commons as on the business of the King and Country. With income tax and sales tax and all the other taxes duly paid, the Timmins firm naturally wondered why the House of Commons on any member therecof should be writing letters, postage free, to humble business firms in this city of the (North,. It was pleasing, though, to think 't'hqht‘he House of Commons knew of the exisâ€" tence of this City of Timmins. Apart from the keen knowledge and interest displayed in collecting the taxes and impositions of all kinds, it looks often as if the House of Commons is unaâ€" ware that there is a City of Timmins mise. Inside the envelope was the formal letterhead of the House of Commons, coat of arms and all,â€"the usual letâ€" ten paper for the use of members in communications about the country‘s business. “tPerhdps, this is a letter to say that Timmins is to get its muchâ€" needed Post Office building?"‘‘ was a thought, as the letter was opened. <<Or, perhaps, it is in regand to. that needed dock at the Mattagami Landâ€" ing?"‘‘ (But no! «This is the way the letter read:â€"‘*Having some potatoes to dispose of we were advised to write you in that regard. Would you be in the manket for a earload. of good. potatocs.? And, if so, what would you be prepared to pay per bag.?" The ‘letter was signed with a firm name, one of the firm no doubt being a member of the country‘s parhament' â€"very likely a Progressive. \ellmo' potatoes by mail will appear, to many to be a sign of progress. Sellmg potatoes by mail, with the Country paying the postage, is a sign of Pl‘t)gl'ebbl\ eness. But the people, overburdened now with taxes and imâ€" 'pu\ltlons, will feel that this Progresâ€" sive Govemment business is earried too far, just as it was in the Progressive Government of Ontario in which Honourable Peter Smith was a leading light. Political campaign litenature issued "by the ton and forwarded postage free, at the country‘s expense, is bad enough, but when the Members start to use their mail qprivileges to sell potatoes by mail, it surely looks like small poiatooes and few in a hill. Hasn‘t th‘s business gone a little too far? Is it not ‘high time for the country to turn Conservative agzain ? ANOTHER LETTER FROM PORCUPINE MINERS‘ UNION The Poreupine Miners‘ Union has handed The Advance a copy of a seeâ€" ond letter written the Mines of the district asking for an increase in wage seales. This letter follows the line of the one sent in February, suggestâ€" ing that there is an increase in the cost of living and an increase in wages is accordingly in order. Quotations are made from The Labour Gazette to uphold the viewpoint : of the Union. Comparison is also made of the inâ€" erease enjoyed by other occupations since 1914 and â€" those of the mineâ€" workers. As an offset to these arguâ€" ments, however , is the fact that the Mines here pay the highest scale of wages to similar woukers in.Canada, and also that there is a decided tendâ€" ency in the country to reduction in wage scales.
