Timmins reader of The Advance called special attention on several ocâ€" casions to the situation in regard to the wineâ€"producingâ€" districts of Onâ€" tario. ‘‘They voted strong for the tario Temperance Act, and why so ?" he asked. hnsxxermo his own quesâ€" tion he pointed out that the reason was that they wanted to continue the prejudiced situation now in force. They wighed something like a monoâ€" poly of Ontario‘s booze business. This reader pointed out that native wines contained a comparitively high percentage of alcohol, and yet werel; freely sold. The whole situation in regard to the native wine business appedred to be interesting. Some of the people from the native wine areas are now holding up their hands in holy horror at the thought of inâ€" creasing the strength of beer to five per cent. The Ottawa Journal in an editorial article last week places the case in effective way. The Journal says :â€"‘‘It is, as Attorney (General Nickle says, an anomal) that so much fuss should be made in Ontario about increasing to 4.4 per cent. the perâ€" missable alcoholie content of beer, when the sale annually of, approxiâ€" matelv $1,000,000 worth of native wines with a permissable alcoholic content of 28 per cent. continues with little if any protest. IF 28 p.c. WINE IS RIGHT, WHY KICK AT 5 p.c. BEEKE. In recognition of the national serâ€" vice rendered by Dr. Charles Saun:â€" ders in the development of *‘ Marâ€" quis‘‘ wheat, the Dominion Governâ€" ment included in the main estimates $5,000 for the purpose of providing Dr. Saunders with an annuity. a man can get inâ€" toxicated on native wine just as cheaply as on beer, so the reason for the anomaly is not to be found in the price. Nor can it be said that naâ€" tive wines are harder to get. For a few dollars anybody can have a case of native wine delivered to his house from the manufacturer within a day or two. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO ‘©Probably the only excuse for leâ€" galizing the sale of 28 per cent. native wine is the fact that a large number of farmers who produce grapes would be deprived of their mainstay. But when the breweries and distilleries were put out of business in Ontari0, nobody worried very much about what was to become of the thousands of men employed in these places: they were advised to change their o¢â€" cupation. _ The farmers who grow grapes are in a better position, beâ€" cause if necessary they can grow something else on the same farm. ‘It does seem as if those who are so vigonrously opposing 4.4 per cent. beer shouldâ€"for the sake of consisâ€" tency and for the sake of those who they believe are harmed by aleoholâ€" start a systematic campaign against the len'allzed manufacture sale in Ontario of 28 per cent. native "v;“n’, Lawyer, crosgs examining: ‘‘Do you drink 2 Witness, haughtily: ‘‘That‘s my business."" Recently there has been casual disâ€" ecussion as to the dates of the various Poreupine Dog Races. Discussion along this line shows how dangerous it is to depend on memory in a case like this, as one man was positive one of the races was as late as March 27th or 28th. As a matter of fact the latest date on which the Dog Race was ever held was March 25th, and that was the first yBar, 1916. The race had been set for an earlier date but owing to a big snow storm the date was changed some days preâ€" vious to the first date set. The race has never been postponed on the date selected, but has been run on at least two stormy days. Postponements have been made on account of the weather in different years, but these changes have been decided on in adâ€" vance of the selected date of the race, Below will be found a review of the dates for all the Poreupine Dog Races, together with the names of winners, times made, ete., March â€" 25th, 1916â€"Jos. FRIDAY IS ‘"‘LADIES‘ NIGHT‘" AT CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. Fnday evening of the week Feb. 27th, is ‘‘Ladies‘ Night‘‘ at the Caledonian Society of Timmins, the event to be held in the Hollinger Reâ€" creation Hall, commencing at 8.00 o‘clock. The Ladies‘ Committee are preparing to make this the bwgest and best of all the ‘‘Ladies‘ Nights,"‘ and that is saying a lot for the preâ€" vious ‘‘Ladies‘ Nights‘‘ stand out as among the long list of good nights at the Caledonian Society. _ The proâ€" gramme will include voecal and instruâ€" mental numbers, dancing, the best in refreshments, ete., and some novelâ€" ties. Friday evening will be, wi‘ out doot, a braw bricht nicht. All Caleâ€" donians and their friends are welâ€" come. DOG RACE THIS YEAR TO BE HELD ON A FRIDAY. Since its. inauguration in 1916, when it was started with the "chief purpose of assisting in the raising of money for the Patriotie Fund, the Poreupine Dog Race has always been held on a Saturday. This year the date selected is a Friday, though not "Friday the 13th.‘‘ The date for 1925 is Friday the 6th. In case it has to be postponed a week, it would be the supposed unluecky date, all right. It has been necessary on several occeasions to postpone the Race from the date first announced. Many will hope that a week‘s postâ€" ponement will not be required this year. As it is now there are just two weeks to conelude arrangements and assure another success for this distinctive North Land event.
