There are some people who will cheerfully pay a bill or seâ€" cure eash through the issuing of a cheque, even though they know there are no fTunds to meet the cheque so issued. During the past year or so Timmins and district have had thei» share of this worthless cheque issuâ€" ing. â€" Through good nature, or someâ€" thing else, few of the cases have been reported to the police, but all know of the prevalence of the pracâ€" tice. â€" Business men who have been ‘*stung"" on worthless cheque husiness will be interested in learnâ€" inz that sometimes the mean practice is punished in this country. Some days ago a man giving the name of Grant MeLennan was picked up at Chariton and â€" taken to Haleybury whene he appeared before Magistrate Atkinson on the charge of passing worthless chequss. Police investigaâ€" tion showed that MeLennan had isâ€" suned nine cheques, all for comparaâ€" tively small amounts, and drawn on different banks. The cheques were issued in Englehart and New keard. MeLennanâ€" pleaded gulty to the one charge made against him and Magist‘rate Atkinson sentenced the accused to not less than three months and not mone than two years less one day at the prison farm.
