This week The Advance received a letter from Mr. Balmer Neilly, secereâ€" tary of the Ontario Mining Associaâ€" tion, enclosing a memorandum regardâ€" ing the effect of the tariff changes on the mining industry of Canada. exâ€" clusive of coal mining machinery. The memorandum shows that the recent changes in the tariff and in the sales tax as set forth in the new budget announced in the Dominion House, last week, mean a_ saving of $178,â€" 408.05 to the mining industry of Canâ€" ada. There is no protection in tariffs on wold and silver and so mining operâ€" ators have contended with considerâ€" able justification that they should not have to pay duty upon their essential machinery. â€" Further, it may be noted that, speaking generally, the imported machinery for mining operations is in lines not manufactured in Canada. Accordingly the customs duties.can not be «considersd as protection to home industries. They have been, indeed, little more or less than a simple burâ€" den oh the mining industry. The new tariff gives a partial relief to the mining industry. ~It means that some $178,000.00 will be avoil«lMle for adâ€" ditional mining operations. In â€" his memorandum â€" Secretary In his â€" memorandumâ€" Secretary Neilly shows the 1923 figures on imâ€" ports of ore crushers and rock erushâ€" ers, stamp mills, Cornish and belted rolls, rock drills and pereussion «coal cutters, â€" are _ as follows:â€"Imports from United Kingedom, $67,648; duty collected, #10,174.83. Of the alsove ~$221 from United Kingdom and $756,558 from _ the United States come under the Géneral Tariff, the duty collected being $60.70 ankt v#207/00Q163â€" respectively, ‘or a total of $208,052.33. Under _ the Preferential Tariff the imports from the United Kingdom total $67, 427 with duty of $10,114.05. Now, the drop in the Preferential Tariff from 15 per cent to 10 per cent. indicates a saving of 5% on $64. 427.00, which amounts to $3,371.35. The â€"drop in the General Tariff from 27 per cent. to 20 per cent. indieates WHY DOES YOUR DOCTOR .
