Sust hefore the recent Dog Derby at #hbe Pas Manitoba a dastardly attempt xz made to poison the Morgan dog Rexm, looked upon as the most proâ€" Bahle winner of the event. Meat baits with poison concealed in them were feund in front of the dogs, but forâ€" the animals had refused to esech the poisoned baits. â€" Previous » this Mr. Morgan suspected that motson in the form of powder had been sqitriskled around the dog ‘house. A wpeesal eonstaible was sworn in to watsi the dogs until after the race. According to advices last week from Dane, Ont., there is a regular rush on in claim staking in Northern Quebec. A chain of claims extending in a conâ€" tinuous line for a length of approximâ€" ately 35 miles has ‘been staked from the Ontarioâ€"Quebec horder line to the centre of Joanne Township. On every claim where any noticeable amount of work has been done, the reports are very encouraging. As soonâ€"as spring opens and the snow goes general surâ€" face work will be taken up likely over the whole area staked. ‘On the Cockâ€" eranr claims, among the dfirst disâ€" coveries, there has been diamond drill ing in progress for some time past. It is understood that the results from the drilling have been very pleasing and promising. A mining plant is beâ€" ing installed on the Powell property, another of the early stakings. The attitude of the Quebec Governâ€" ment is particularly worthy of note in the matter. Also it might be weli worth copying by some other Governâ€" ments.. The Quebee Government has CONTINUOUS LINE OF 35 MILES STAKED IN QUEBEC No will 18 e matter. Also it might be weli h eopying by some other Governâ€" s. Whether that is true or not, it is a fact that there are more mining deals at present, involving purchases of Nor thern Ontario mining properties, than at any time since the war. The whole of Northern Ontario mining is efferâ€" vescing with expectation of great deâ€" velopments on propérties hitherto ignored, or only prospected. ‘*‘‘The remedying of the power situâ€" ation is the main need. ‘The Northern Ontario mining area has plenty of good waterpowers, but the inaction or incapacity of the Drury Government has delayed utilization of these for mining purposes, ~and the Spring breakâ€"up must be awaited to restore capacity of even the present plants. It is said, on good authority, that apâ€" plications will be made to the Quebec Government for development rights on water powers on the Quebee side of the boundary, as the Taschereau ‘Minâ€" istry is keenly alert to the industrial possibilities of Northern Quebec. It can ‘be said quite confidently, that the power needs of Poreupine, Kirkland Lake, and other gold areas will double inside of another year or two, even beyond the present needs. Some of the bigger mines have an immense additional equipment ready, lbut powâ€" er is lacking. The biggest one is conâ€" templating milling seven or eight thou sand tons of ore per day. This would be equal to 160 freight cars, of 50 tons each. Toronto is the natural base of supplies for this great development, but if this city is to obtain the benefits of the work going on there, it must bestir itself. ‘‘The somewhat unfavorable outâ€" look for much improvement in Westâ€" ern busmess ‘Mds uS To AuUSLIE WILHL developments of a constructive nature nearer home. Toronto capital is disâ€" posed to leave Northern Ontario minâ€" ingâ€"real miningâ€"too much to Amerâ€" ican capital. English capital is coming in again. The control of a lot of good properties in the North is passing to outsiders. Even if the large sums reâ€" quired to make a gold mine ‘have to come from New York, Boston, Buffalo Rochester, or other American centres, Toronto should at least lbe deeply inâ€" terested in promoting such developâ€" ments for the sake of the supplies of food, clothing and materials that are sold here for use in the Camps. Some financial leaders of Toronto are too much concerned with Spanish, Braziliâ€" an, or Mexican ventures and not enough with out own natural reâ€" sources."‘‘ Mr. Blimp: ‘‘Remember, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
