Last week Mr. Henry O‘Brien, who lives on the Haileybury Road near, North Cobalt told the police of a brut al attack upon him with robbery as the apparent motive. One night about 11 o‘clock heweaidâ€"three men entered his house and demanded money. Event ually he gave then $95.00, all he had, but they said he had $2000,00, and ,thcy tied him up, put a rope around his neck, and about strangled him in an effort to make him tell where the $2000.00 was hidden. Also they threat ened him with revolvers and daggers. They left him tied hand and feot on the bed, and he was found in that con dition in the morning hy neighbors who heard his ealls for help. He was not able to give a very definite descrip tion of the men, except that two of them were small men and the third a tall fellow, and that the three were French apparently. When the police went: to O‘Brien‘s house to invesâ€" tigate the matter, Inspector Rowell noticed a barrel with some *‘queer stufft"‘ in it apparently. Investigaâ€" tion â€" suggested that <the stuff was or and a further search of the house brought to light a for the manufacture of "Oh Be | Joyful,"‘ together with some. samples of the manufactured product. The result of this discovery was that O ‘Brien was before Magistrate Atkin son charged with illegally having apâ€" paratus for the distilling of intoxicatâ€" ing liquor. O ‘Brien, who is 65 years of age, pleaded guilty, but said the liquor was made absolutely for his own use alone. He was fined $200.00 and eosts or four months in North Bay jail. Thus, last week be had a run of hard luck, indeedâ€"being robbâ€" ed, beaten, trussed up, threatened, tortured, investigated and eventually fined ~r)UO 00 and costs or four months in jail. He must think it is a hard worldâ€"this North Country. Mr. J. T. Easton continues to make good progress to recovery and it is expected that he will soon be out and around again as usual. ..
