Golden Encampment, No. 107, South Poreupine, will give a Dance on Wedâ€" nesday evening, December the 19th., ‘n the Oddfellow‘s Hall, South End. Major D. M. Brodie, former magisâ€" trate at Sudbury, and a prominent Liâ€" beral, writing from overseas, says:â€"â€" "It is the duty of every loyal British subject in Algoma and Nipissing to support Conscription and the â€"Union Government.â€" There is no. other course.‘‘ As Major Brodie went overâ€" seas with the 159th Battalion his Mesâ€" sage should also have an interest for the people of Temiskaming. A very sad death occurred last Tues day at the Dome Mines w hen the twoâ€" \Lar-uld daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick son, of the Dome, passed away after a very brief illness. It is thought that the ehild, Dorothy Eileen contracted a chill and complieatrons ensuing, all that eare and medical skill could do proved unavailing. _ The funeral took place on Friday morning and the many beautiful floral tributes indicated the sympathy felt for the parents in their sorrow. 6 At the Fall Assizes at Haileybury last week Telesphore Lacarte, farmer of about 45â€"years of age, living beâ€" tween Charlton and Englehart, was charzed with an unnatural offence aâ€" cainst his fourteenâ€"yearâ€"old daughter. he was found guilty, and Chief Justice Faleonbridge imposed a sentence of 25 yvears‘ imprisonment. This is proâ€" bably the most severe sentence ever imposed in a North Land Court, yet though practically a life sentence it is not too much when the offence is conâ€" sidered. Probably the first ease of its kind in Canada commeneed last week when Lawrence St. Pierre, of the Township of Nairn, was placeed under arrest on a charge of perjury in connection with the Military Service Act. The inforâ€" mation sworn out by the Military Reâ€" presentative on the Sudbury Tribunal charges that the aceused committed perjury in order to otain exemption, by swearing that he was a farmer, farming 90 acres of land, and was the sole support of his father, 71 years of agoe. _ The authorities claim that in ’muking these statements, or at least some of them, St. Pierre was guilty of perjury. At the Fall Assizes last week at Haileybury whe charge of chbtaining a matriazes license under false preâ€" tenses, as pwl(nul against E. A. Genâ€" tile, of Timmins, in connection with his marriage early this year to Annie Melntyre, was dismissed. The other charge against him in the same conâ€" nection,â€"the chargeâ€"of abduc. 10n,â€" resulted in his being allowed to go on suspended sentence. _A further action in the civil courts to annul the martiâ€" age is still to be decided.
