FEED OATG CRADEG UNFIT FOR SFET Warnitg to Farmers of the District Regarding Western Seed The following entitled ‘*‘Feed Oat Grades Unfit for Seed", prepared by the Seed Branch, Ottawa, should be of special interest to Tnmskaming ‘©‘Flour and feed dealers who ofâ€" fer the Feed Grades of Western oats should be very ceareful to warn farâ€" mer purchasers against usfing them for seed. The Feed grades contain oats that are frozen or otherwise unsound and not suitable for milling purposes. They usually give a very low perceentagze of germination which results in serious erop failure, The sowing of these frozen oats in past years has given ‘the genâ€" eral impression that all Western oats will not do well in Eastern Canada the first yéear. Home grown seed oats of good quality is so searee this year that farmers should be specially warned against using Feed erades for seed. A Eastern Canada farmers are advised to procure local grown oats of the best quality and clean them to thirty pounds per bushel or bhetter if posâ€" sillle. _ ‘Thus far not more: than 100 000 bushels No.: 1 Canada Western seed oats free from wild oats are available in storage. It may be found necessary to make a grade for No. 2 seed oats containing not more than eight wild oats to the pound. This would be very much superior to the Milling of Feed grades which are foul with noxious and other weed sQQ@Ls. There may possibly be a few farâ€" mers in the district who will purâ€" chase Woestern Feed Oats for seed purposes, if so, kindly be warned in doing so, undoubtedly there will be large quantities of Wild oats and other noxious weed seeds in them. I recently examined a sample of Wesâ€" tern Feed Oats and do not hesitate to state that I believe there was 20 per cent. of wild oats in them. Those who are unfamiliar with the appearâ€" ance of these oats, naturally conâ€" clude they are only common black oats and quite harmless. Be sure of what kind of seed you are sowing as nbthing is gained by seeding land to weeds, NORTHERN ONTARIO POWER STARTING THE YEAR WELL For the first month of their new year the Northern Ontario uzht Power Company shows gross earnâ€" ings of $74,899, compared to $72,303 for the previous month.
