"I've seen a lot of good parks ... but this is the best one I've ever seen," said teenager Mark Appleyard. Fellow skateboarder Alex Rothbauer, who was intimately involved with the facility's creation, said the final product turned out just the way planners envisioned it. "It's the best," he said. "It was worth all the trou ble." Parks and Recreation Director Bob Perkins agreed wholeheartedly: "All the feedback we've had is that it's the best they've been on. We're con vinced it's the best municipal skateboard park in the province." All these comments were made last Friday dur ing the official opening of the long-awaited park, where anxious youths itching to test their acrobatic skill listened patiently to all the speeches before finally being let loose to enjoy the site. Ward 1 councillor Kevin Flynn drew the biggest laughs when he said the park was an example of government actually getting something right. "I think we've done something very right for the community," he said. "Council showed a lot of courage in backing the youth who wanted this. This is an opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong." Flynn was referring to some Oakville residents who rejected the choice of Donovan Bailey Way Park and others who didn't think the Town - which leaned heavily on local youth for input - could pull it off. The park required the input of skateboarders so that the finished product adequately meets their needs and expectations. This included the design of correct angles, distances, skill levels, surfacing and overall safety. The park had its beginnings last year as an ini tiative of the Oakville Youth Advisory Committee (OYAC). Member Rachel Burton, who doesn't even skateboard, became involved after friends were continuously hassled over their skateboard activities. "I saw there was a need that needed solutions," said Burton, who contacted Town manager of Recreation Services Ray Chisholm, who pulled the necessary people together. "It had to be a youth ini tiative, but I have to thank Ray when so many adults were against it." Some grownups, like Lubomir Dzamba of Stafford Haensli Architects, were as excited by Friday's opening as the young people. Dzamba said he and a van-load of skateboarders toured a variety of parks for research and returned with a wealth of measurements, photographs and impressions. Clay models were created and every attempt was made to come up with a design that everyone could final ly agree on. "All the kids say that nothing touches this," said Dzamba. Ward 1 councillor Ralph Robinson, one of the driving forces behind the creation of the facility, could barely contain his enthusiasm while address ing Friday's crowd. "Guys and gals, this is really exciting. I really mean that," he said. 'This is a state-of-the-art facil ity." The park will be open daily from dawn to dusk and the Parks and Recreation Department recommends that proper safety equipment be worn - something Mayor Ann Mulvale stressed to the assembled youths. Mulvale also wanted a commitment that, now the park is open, they will respect public proper ty elsewhere in town and desist from skateboard ing there. "We are absolutely delighted to open this today," she said. Retired Eastview Public School teacher Don Morrison, who had a hand in the park's creation, summed up all the time and effort necessary to reach a successful conclusion when he said, "It's about time, but good things are worth waiting for."
