Another fall blooming plant is the fragrant sweet autumn clematis which has white<4 flowers covering the whole plant from August to October. Another European favourite fall flower is helenium or Helen's Flower or Sneezeweed. It has bright daisy-type flowers ideal for bouquets. 'Bruno' has crimson-mahogany flowers and is one of the Bressingham Garden varieties. It is useful for wet areas. Physostegia or Obedient Plant is a native wildflower with pink, white or lavender flowers. The trendy variety is 'Variegata,' with green leaves thickly blotched with cream. Iney are now eat ing the thin leaf hosta, dahlias, and any young plants. I have been putting out saucers of pop, but any sweet smelling liquid will do. It attracts slugs, and they fall in. They may be picked off the plants at night. Use a flashlight to find them. The echinops are flowering on their secondary buds and are cov ered with bumble bees and butter flies. The Rose of Sharon is now in flower as the dahlias fade. Crabgrass is going to seed so should be pulled or dug out right away. One shrub that has not flowered yet is the turtle head or chelone. This is a 30-inch high plant with pink flowers along the top of each stem. There is also a white vari ety. They will flower in a week or two and last until October. The true sign of fall is the flowering of the Golden Rod, or solidago. While looking through the July Flora Culture magazine, I came across a colourful adver tisement for this flower by Danziger Flower Farm in Israel. They specialize in solidago. Turning to local sources, I find there are many Golden Rod hybrids that are bushier and shorter and more compact than the roadside types. They are recommended to go with fall asters. In fact, there is a v a r i e t y , 'Solidaster,' which is a hybrid between the two. It has star ry yellow and pale cream flowers and is popular with florists for flower a r r a n g e m e n t s . 'Lemore' is 30 inches high with wide branching fluffy panicles of soft primrose yel low flowers. Golden rod does not cause hay fever but flowers at the same time and takes the blame for the ragweed which does cause the mis- JOHN SIMKINS The Cruickshank's fall catalogue arrived just as their new store opened at the comer of Navy and Robinson streets. It occupies the whole mall and will be easy to get into and out of with the installation of a new fourway stop at the comer. The store will stock all plants in the catalogue, so they may be obtained there with no postage and handling charge. The catalogue openers are two purple border collections. The first with special varieties of iris, daylily, alliums, tulip and lilies for a spring/summer display and second an early spring mixture of alliums 'Purple Sensation' and 'Tulip Ballade.' Both will kick-start the garden into early colour. Gardenimport seeks out the new, unusual and the rare, combining these with the customer's choices over the years to bring something different but growable to Canadian and U.S. gardens. The catalogue has 64 pages, 40 of spring _______________ flowering bulbs and 15 of perennials including five flowering shrubs listed alphabetically with the perennials. The two catalogues have some overlap, and there is some variation in prices so obtain one of each and spend an hour or two reading them and preparing your orders. Cruickshank's is at Navy and Robinson Streets, phone 845-8195. Gardenimport has a website www.gardenimport.com, phone 1-800-339-8314 or e-mail flowers@gardenimport.com for a catalogue or information.
