SATIRIST, of Oakville QBN (905) 845-1610 Dudds Company a mid-size budget If you're a business person, a fleet buyer, a traveler, or just someone with a big family, cost is a limiting factor when you're thinking full-size sedan on a mid-size budget. It's pretty easy to get a big car if you can afford to shop in the lux ury and premium luxury class. But in the $24-$27,000 bracket (about the price of a good mid-sized car) the pickings get pretty slim. Only 20 years ago Chrysler produced large, seemingly un-killable cars with small price tags like the Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Fury. Chryco sig naled that it is seeking out this market again when it consciously made two differ ent cars under the skin of the Chrysler Intrepid. The base Intrepid and the Intrepid ES share the same svelte styling that wowed the crowds in 1993 when the entire LS concept car was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Even today, the slippery skin with a 0.299 coefficient of drag is on a par with LeMans racers. The Audi TT, with its much ballyhooed aerostyling, has a drag coefficient of 0.34. In fact about the only outward dif ference between the two Bramalea- built Intrepids is the letters "ES" on the door of the more expensive car and fog lights in the front spoiler of the ES model - and that's it. Trunk volume is a gargantuan 521 litres (18.4 cu. ft) and a cargo net is now standard. With the optional 50/50 split bench front seat, six can sit com fortably as the car is 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) wide and the wheelbase is 2,870 mm (113 inches). The ES is only available with a 3.2- litre, single overhead cam V6 produc ing 225 hp and 225 ft/lb of torque. The only transmission is a four-speed auto matic with AutoStick, a mode that lets the driver select gears manually. The base intrepid, as tested here, is only available with a 2.7-litre, 24- valve, twin-cam V6. Instead of the 170- 1280 hp one would expect from an engine this size and running on regular fuel, the 2.7 pro duces 200 hp while provid ing fuel economy values of 11.3L/100 km (25 mpg) city, and just 7.1L/100 km (40 mpg) highway. Torque rating on this engine is 190 ft/lb and it is hooked up to the only transmission offered with the 2.7, a four- speed automatic with over drive and lockup torque con verter. Both intrepids are fitted with standard air condition ing, power windows and locks, AM/FM stereo and the front bucket seats standard (the buckets allow rear heat/AC vents as well). The white gauges with black ideograms are now the same on both cars. Nice for the price are the standard block heater and the triple nozzle windshield washer jets. You can buy the base Intrepid for $25,060. Making it more homey can be done with a few inexpensive options. A full-size spare tire is $175 while mov ing up to the optional 16-inch steel wheels/tires/plastic wheel covers is just $260. Add another $260 for the option al Bright Platinum Metallic Clear Coat and you have an Intrepid that looks like a LHS. The CD player with eight speakers and night-and-day better sound was $425 Because this is Canada, optional four-steel ABS was another $745. The best deal of all was the $870 Customer Preferred Package 22D. This includes 120-watt amplifier, passenger assist handles, illuminated entry system, remote keyless entry, (See 'Intrepid" page C8) J IM ROBINSON RoadWorthy LOCKWOOD'S DRIVE PREOWNED '9 7 DODGE DAKOTA PICK-UP Finished in flame red!!
