Dubbed, BeCause Oak­ ville, the program focuses on a solution-driven request for proposal (RFP) process. Starting Jan. 15, the foun­ dation will request propos­ als from charities to address three priority solutions to local issues. These solutions, which were identified through Sheridan College's research on housing and food insecu­ rity include: .Expanding Oakville's capacity of emergency shel­ ter; reimagining spaces for housing and emergency shelters by looking at unoc­ cupied warehouses, indus­ trial complexes, commercial properties, closed down school buildings and hospi­ tals. .Investing in low-cost housing alternatives through new builds and re­ purposing. .Creating a one stop, inte­ grated intake system for food bank members. This could include advocacy ser­ vices for clients. Proponents are invited to request grants and/or loans up to $200,000 on a multi­ year basis. Funding for BeCause Oakville will be made possi­ ble through the foundation's Vital Community Fund and its fundholders. Funding for these priori­ ties with a newcomer focus will be available through the Oakville Resettlement Fund. Those interested in ap­ plying for this funding have until Feb. 28 to do so. "It is the foundation's in­ tent that BeCause Oakville will become an annual RFP seeking broad-based priori­ ty solution in Oakville's charitable sector," said Wen­ dy Rinella, Oakville Com­ munity Foundation CEO. "The foundation will con­ tinue its research in part­ nership with Sheridan Col- lege and new solutions will be developed in 2018 that will be supported by BeCause Oakville in 2019." The foundation has been conducting annual reports, called Vital Signs & Creating Vital Solutions. Foundation staff say these are research based, us­ ing local knowledge, to bet­ ter understand and thus ad­ dress systemic issues the community is facing. "The journey from Vital Signs to BeCause Oakville has engaged many sectors of Oakville: government, busi­ ness, not for profits, service clubs and clients," said Ri- nella. "I am very thankful for the support of these organi­ zations as well as the leader­ ship of Sheridan College to envision life after Vital Signs."
