Carla Draper, Halton Police Const. Ashley Lilliman, Oakville Firefighter Tim Draper, Wellspring Events Manager Claudia Connor, Halton Police Const. Marc Taraso, CN Police Const. Willem Bijl, Halton Police Inspector Dave Stewart, Halton Regional Police Association President Barry Hughes, Halton Region Paramedic Services Deputy Chief Christine Barber, and Union Gas Oakville Utility Services Manager Marc Hoewing participate in cheque presentation at Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House. DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com Local cancer support centre, Wellspring Bir mingham Gilgan House, received more than $4,600 Wednesday, Jan. 10 thanks to a fundraising initiative organized by Halton po lice. Officers teamed up with numerous community partners to raise the funds during an Oct. 18 barbecue at the Oakville police sta tion. The money was well re ceived by Wellspring staff. "What happened today was just absolutely unbe lievable," said Claudia Connor, Wellspring events manager. "Wellspring does not re ceive any government funding so it is so very im portant to receive dona tions from the community whether that be from com munity events or individu als. We are so grateful." This is the second bar becue Halton police have organized to benefit Well- spring. The first was held in 2016. "Two years ago we de cided to hold a fundraiser because we found out someone very special in our workforce was battling breast cancer - that would be our deputy chief Carol Crowe," said event orga nizer and retired Halton Const. Carla Draper. "Everybody was won dering what we could do to help; what we could do for the community. This wasn't just about one mem ber of our service, this was about many members and their families that have had some trials and tribu lations with health." Draper settled on the idea of a fundraising bar becue in October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) and through the help of many community part ners the event succeeded in raising more than $10,000. "We had a lot of people just wanting to help," said Draper. "We had the Real Cana dian Superstore providing food. We had Union Gas do ing the barbecuing. We had Voortman Cookies provid ing some snacks. We had McDonald's providing all the hotdogs and the buns and condiments." Other fundraising part ners included CN Police, the Halton Regional Police Association, the Halton Regional Police Senior Of ficer Association, Halton Police Chief Stephen Tan ner, KCK Teamwear, the Oakville Fire Department, Halton Region Paramedic Services, Oakville EMS, the Town of Oakville and Unique Roots. Draper and Halton Const. Ashley Lilliman or ganized a second barbecue last year following the death of Halton police ci vilian member Kerry Hal- covitch from pancreatic cancer on June 13,2017. She was 53. Halcovitch had worked as an administrative assis tant to Chief Tanner. The same community partners assisted in mak ing that event a success raising more than $4,600. "Cancer is something that hits home for every body," said Draper. "It just made sense that we partner with Well- spring." Draper noted Halton po lice plan on holding a third fundraiser barbecue at the new police headquarters on Bronte Road in October. She is calling on anyone who can donate to Well- spring to do so and thereby allow the organization to continue its important work. Wellspring Birming ham Gilgan House pro vides more than 40 profes sionally led programs and services in an effort to meet the psychosocial, emotional, practical and educational needs of peo ple living with cancer and their loved ones. The charity welcomes individuals with cancer at any stage of their journey, including during and after treatment. Connor said more than 23,000 individuals have re ceived support and care at the centre since its cre ation in 2000. mailto:info@overheaddoorburlington.ca mailto:wbul@bellnet.ca mailto:dlea@oakvillebeaver.com The Genuine.
