The amalgamation will in crease service capacities of the agencies collectively, as the new Big Brothers Big Sis ters of Halton and Hamilton will become the second-larg est Big Brothers Big Sisters charity of 108 affiliates across Canada. Nearly two years of delib eration and planning have preceded this announce ment. Unanimously, board of director members agree that by sharing collective resourc es, the children of Halton and Hamilton will benefit. Com munities will be served better, and over time, the amalgam- ation will lead to program ex pansion in both areas. Mark Kent, board chair of the BBBSHB, said the deci sion is a proactive, long-term strategy that will enhance the legacies of the independent local agencies. "We are building a stron ger foundation to sustain mentoring in our region," he said. Through shared program ming, fundraising, marketing and administration, BBBSHH will effectively and efficiently recruit and retain mentors for children. "We are positioning our lo cal Big Brothers Big Sisters charities for long-term suc cess," said, Sandra Baker, ex ecutive director of BBBSH. "This amalgamation just makes sense for the commu nity. For historical reasons, Burlington children have been looked after by the Ham- ilton-Burlington agency, and the Halton agency has man aged those in the rest of the re gion." "Through this amalgam ation, all children and all vol unteer mentors will work with the same team, regard less of where they live," said Geoffrey Carpenter, board chair of the Halton agency. The upcoming structural change will not affect existing clients, volunteers and do nors, said Baker. "One of the many benefits to the model we chose in com ing together is that all of the current volunteers, children and families will come into the new organization seam lessly," she said. "Although BBBSHH special events and fundraising will be united, one of the guiding principles that we have agreed on is that should a donor choose, their designation will be honoured, whether it is for a specific pur pose, program or geographic area," Baker added. It is anticipated that with its collective forces united, BBBSHH will mentor some 2,800 youth in the region by the end of this year.
