NEWS NEWS Town holds open house on hydro line tree pruning Metroland file photo Oakville Town Hall will be the scene of a open house for those interested in the town's upcoming tree pruning activities. Improperly used battery blanket blamed for Oakville garage fireArea residents interested in learning more about the town's upcoming tree pruning activities around hydro lines in east Oakville are invited to attend an open house on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The event will be held in Oakville Town Hall's South Atrium from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Starting this month, the town and its tree service contractor will perform hy dro line clearing in east Oakville, on behalf of Oak ville Hydro. Town staff said trees would be pruned to ensure branches are a safe dis tance from hydro lines, in an effort to minimize safe ty hazards and power out ages. Oakville Hydro will also co-ordinate pole construc tion with the line clearing program in this area. Representatives from the town's forestry section and Oakville Hydro will be present at the open house. Residents will also have the opportunity to hear about the Emerald Ash Borer and Woodlands Haz ard Abatement programs. Oakville Hydro follows Electrical Safety Authority guidelines to maintain a three-metre (10-foot) clear ance between branches and primary power lines. Town staff noted as a last resort, some trees growing too close to the hydro line may need to be removed if the arborist cannot achieve the clear ance standard through pruning. DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Fire De partment says an attempt to keep a vehicle battery warm in last night's (Thursday, Jan. 4) frigid temperatures is behind a Birchcliff Drive garage fire. Firefighters were called to the home at around 9:30 p.m., after receiving a call from the homeowner that a vehicle in the residence's garage had caught fire. Oakville fire prevention officer Max Bertling said the individual tried to ex tinguish the fire himself. When that failed those inside the dwelling evacu ated safely. Bertling said firefight ers arrived on the scene to find the garage engulfed in flames. The blaze was quickly extinguished. "It had gotten into the walls a little bit, but they extinguished that as well," said Bertling. "I don't think there was very much fire extension into the house at all." No damage estimate is available at this time. Bertling said the fire was caused by the improp er use of a battery blanket, a device used to keep a ve hicle battery warm during the winter. "This battery blanket was plugged in and an addi tional blanket was put on top of this," said Bertling. "You are not supposed to do that and it was this addi tional blanket that caught fire. So the fire started right on top of the battery in the car."
