Suits She's a script consultant for hit TV series MARTA MARYCHUK mmarychuk@ oakvillebeaver.com Karolyn Carnie's pas sion for television writing has led her on a journey from her native Oakville to Los Angeles, where she works as a script consul tant for the hit television series Suits. Carnie, now 28, grew up in Oakville and went to Ir oquois Ridge High School. After graduating from high school, Carnie went to Sheridan College, where she studied Media Fundamentals for one year. "I knew that I loved tele vision," added Carnie. After Sheridan, she went to Ryerson Universi ty, in Toronto, to study Ra dio and Television Arts (RTA), graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. While at Ryerson, Car nie was one of only 20 stu dents selected to study at the summer program at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) at RTA in LA, an intensive boot camp on the United States film and television industry. There, she gained expe rience pitching scripts and being on set for live tapings and rehearsals. "The ex perience al ways lin gered with me," said Carnie, who always wanted to writer for American television. Carnie says writ ing for tele vision appealed to her as a way she could make a dif ference - the way the tele vision comedy series Will & Grace helped pave the way for gay actors and ed ucating the public on les bian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) is sues. After graduating from Ryerson, Carnie got a job working in the documen tary film industry in To ronto. She risked everything and went back to Los An geles to work as an office production assistant for Suits. Suits, which premiered on television in 2011, is set in New York City as bril liant college-dropout Mike Ross is on the run from a drug deal gone bad, and finds a job working with Har vey Spec ter, one of New York City's best lawyers. Aaron Korsh, who was a writer for television's Just Shoot Me and Everybody Loves Raymond created Suits, which is actually shot in Toronto and stars Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman and Meagh- an Markle. Markle left the show this year, following her en gagement this year to Eng land's Royal Family's Prince Harry. The position on Suits was originally supposed to be for two weeks, but after three days she was hired full-time. In the meantime, Car nie finished her Master's Degree at UCLA in Screenwriting while she worked her way up on the television show, from a producer's assistant to show runner's assistant, to her current position as script consultant. "It's an amazing experi ence," adds Carnie, who is part of a team of writers and assistants who pitch ideas and develop scripts for Suits. When Carnie first moved to Los Angeles, she thought it would be like home. "I was sadly mistak en," she adds. "The first three months were a cul ture shock." But with help from Ca nadian expatriates in Los Angeles, Carnie has found support and friendship, including celebrating Canada Day at the only Smoke's Poutinerie in Los Angeles. "I'm so glad I'm here," she adds. "The first three months were culture shock... I'm so glad I'm here." --Karolyn Carnie Karolyn Carnie photo Karolyn Carnie works as a script consultant for the hit television series Suits.
