Fundraising goal was $118,000 DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Salvation Army is offering the local community and its volunteers a massive 'thank you' following the re­ sounding success of its annual Christmas Kettle campaign. The charity succeeded in rais­ ing more than $127,000, far ex­ ceeding its fundraising goal of $118,000. The holiday Kettle Campaign ran from late November until Dec. 23 and saw more than 100 vol­ unteers supervise kettles across Oakville. "The people of Oakville have really stepped up to help their neighbours and their community with the support we saw this year," said Oakville Salvation Ar­ my Corps officer/pastor, Major Mike Hennessy. Shannon Robinson, co-ordina- tor for the charity's Community and Family Services program, said the successful outcome could not have been achieved without the volunteers who ac­ cepted donations at the kettles. She said 108 people volun­ teered to participate in the Kettle Campaign, including 58 high school students. These volunteers put in a total of more than 1,300 hours at the kettles. The holiday Kettle Campaign is the only time each year the Sal­ vation Army solicits donations from the public. "The money that is raised from the Kettle Campaign goes toward funding our entire opera­ tion, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year," said Robin­ son in a previous interview. "Our family services and food bank do not receive any level of government funding so we solely rely on the community for those funds." Robinson noted the local Sal­ vation Army food bank assisted 1,385 people during 2016. The group also helps the needy in the community through clothing voucher programs, fur­ niture referrals, summer camp­ ing programs, income tax clinics and back-to-school support, among other things. The Oakville Salvation Ar­ my's Christmas Assistance Pro­ gram, which provides food and toys to families who otherwise would go without, served approx­ imately 320 local families includ­ ing about 540 children in 2017. The Salvation Army put out a call for Oakville residents to dig deep when, on Dec. 9, it was re­ vealed the Kettle Campaign had only raised $46,324 - just 39 per cent of its goal. At the time, Robinson said or­ ganizers were not panicking be­ cause the start of the campaign is traditionally slow. Even so, with less than two weeks to go until the end of the campaign, Salvation Army staff wanted to see that shortfall re­ duced quickly. Hennessy had emphasized that if the Kettle Campaign failed to reach its fundraising goal the charity's ability to help those in need would be lessened. Since the charity exceeded its goal new programs are likely to be offered by the Oakville Salva­ tion Army in 2018, said Hennessy. Specific information on what these programs may be or what they will do is not currently avail­ able. The Kettle Campaign was not the Oakville Salvation Army's only success during the holiday season. The Giving Back is Priceless Lunch, which was held by the Salvation Army in partnership with CATCH Hospitality, suc­ ceeded in raising more than $25,000 on Dec. 4. That event saw several local restaurants donate 100 per cent of their lunch proceeds to the Oak­ ville Salvation Army.
