The recruitment drive, which is being attributed to attrition, started this month and will continue until Jan. 26. The job application for "probationary firefighters" says the firefighter's role is to protect life and property through firefighting, re sponding to emergency medical and other types of emergency incidents, often performed under condi tions, which require stren uous physical exertion. The application notes firefighters are expected to provide excellent customer service and be leaders in public fire safety education. Firefighters are expec ted to maintain a high stan dard of professionalism, solve problems, work as part of a dynamic team and possess excellent interper sonal and organizational skills. Teamwork is listed as particularly important as firefighters live and work together in close quarters. All team members de pend on each other to per form their duties success fully whether sharing rou tine tasks at the fire station, providing services at an emergency scene, or pro viding service assistance to other agencies and/or the public. Those looking for a 9-5 job are advised to look else where. In Oakville, firefighters work on a rotating 24-hour shift schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays. The federal government is once again encouraging local businesses to hire young people this summer by offering funding through its Canada Summer Jobs Program. The funding is available to all not-for-profit organi zations, public sector em ployers, and small business es with up to 50 employees. The Summer Jobs pro gram provides businesses funding to create summer job opportunities and pro vide valuable work experi ence for full-time students aged 15 to 30 who intend to return to their studies in the next school year. "Helping young Oakvil- lians develop their skills and gain valuable work place experience will en sure that Canada's strong economy and healthy mid dle class can continue to grow and succeed," said Oakville MP John Oliver. "After seeing the success of last year's program, I'm excited to see the positive impact that this summer's funding will have on Oak ville's businesses, organiza tions, and students." Not-for-profit employers can receive 100 per cent of the provincial minimum hourly wage and public sec tor employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees across Canada can receive 50 per cent of the provincial mini mum hourly wage. Additional funding of up to $3,000 per student is avail able to accommodate stu dents with disabilities who may need personal tools and adaptations to accomplish tasks within the workforce. "The Canada Summer Jobs Program invests in our youth and gives them mean ingful experience as they begin their careers," said Oakville Mayor Rob Bur ton. "It also supports local or ganizations that help our community thrive." Minister of Employ ment, Workforce Develop ment and Labour Patty Haj- du also discussed the pro gram. "Canada's young people are not just the leaders of to- morrow- they are leaders to day," she said. "That's why the Govern ment of Canada is creating summer jobs for more young Canadians than ever. "We know that when young people can get great work experience early in their careers, we're helping ensure they have the best possible shot at success." More than $1 million in federal funds through the Canada Summer Jobs Pro gram created 510 summer jobs for Oakville youths in 2017.
