Wednesday, October 13, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Ron Kuzyk Photo Laura Bandy, of Pilgrim wood School, captured the gold medal in the Halton Senior Girls Cross Country Championship. Huge turnout for cross country meet The Halton Board of Education held its annual Halton Championship Cross Country Meet at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington, on Oct. 6th -- 1,886 runners and 53 schools participated in the Junior Meet held in the morning and 675 runners from 29 schools competed in the Senior Meet, held in the afternoon. The races were very exciting. The top teams in each category (deter mined by adding the total of each school's best four places and, therefore, the lowest total represents the winner) was awarded a pennant for their school. Individuals and teams in the top six of each category were awarded ribbons. Halton Junior Schools Team Cross Country Results TYKE GIRLS -- 8 yrs. 1. Pine Grove (51); 2. Limehouse (104); 3. Halton Senior Cross Country results will appear in Firday's Oakville Beaver. Trade to Minnesota revived Gagner's career (Continued from page D1) it is a 'read and react' kind of game. "But I think it gives me a little bit more of an ability to teach it then some other guys who just go with the flow, and they can't explain why they did some thing during a game because it was just the right thing to do, but they're having trouble explaining it. "I used to pre-think certain things, and what I wanted to accomplish in a game. "I overthought. I mean I'd talk to some guys and they'd look at me like I was a little bizarre sometimes. I did like to think about the game." The Minor Oaks Hockey Association has embraced the Mitron system, a com prehensive fitness and training regiment that is age appropriate. Gagner likes what he sees, so far, and, in fact, said a lot of the Mitron drills are similar to what he was doing over the last couple of years, especially in Florida under a skills coach from the Czech Republic. "A lot of these drills are game situa tion drills. As long as you can get the kids to understand that. That's the thing. You've got to get them to understand that these are game situation drills so you have to teach them to visualize being in a game because all kids have a tendency to daydream and just go through the motions in a drill. "But they can really get the most out of it and when they apply them to a game it's just that much easier. It becomes sec ond nature to them. "You always have to teach the kids that while you're doing the drills, pretend you're in a game. "And that's a good thing to teach kids, too, is visualization because that's not something that always comes natural to a lot of kids but it really helps. "Every practice is a dress rehearsal and you have to be able to translate that to a game. The hard work pays off, though, he assures. "It's a rewarding experience when you do those kind of drills and it works in a game. You kind of see what the purpose of them is." Gagner entered the NHL highly touted, drafted 12th overall by the New York Rangers. "It wasn't as good as an experience as I would have liked. I didn't want to disappoint as a high pick and I felt I did. And then I felt I wasn't given the opportunity, but it's all a Catch 22. You don't do well off the bat, then you don't get an opportunity. But if you don't get an opportunity, you don't do well." Being traded to Minnesota, he said, turned out to be a real jump start for his career. "It was a very low key place to play. It was like playing for a junior team. You drive into the rink, you don't see anybody. You play the game as hard as you can and you come out and there's nobody around because it's too cold to stick around after the game. "It was a really easy place to play and it gave me a chance to really concentrate on the game and develop my game at that level. It couldn't have worked out any better. A lot of guys don't get that second chance. "Actually I ran into Dean DaFazio whose son plays for the (Oakville triple-A) major atoms and he was with Pittsburgh, and he didn't get a second chance, really. "Pittsburgh, at that time, was one of the worst organizations in the league. And you know who saved that organization and he's done it again (Mario Lemieux). But he came after Dean was there. "Dean didn't get a chance to go anywhere else. Had he got a chance you never know what could have turned out for him. "There was a lot of guys like that, and I was real ly lucky to get a second chance."
