OTHS field Blades letdown proves costly hockey team undefeated The Oakville Trafalgar senior girls field hockey team defeated Burlington Central 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 4 with goals scored by Caroline Kaars-Sijpesteijn (2) and Laurel Gale. On Wednesday, Oakville Trafalgar played an exciting game against Loyola, winning 1- 0. Sarah Vogt scored the lone goal on a first half penalty shot. Gill Johnson was in goal for both shutouts. Club mate Tina Lopez, nine, and also one year younger than most of the field, was 15th out of 34 runners in the race, finishing in 9:07. Normally a sprinter, Rina did the race as a strength builder. By M att Nimmo SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A pair of losses left the Oakville Blades with little to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Blades saw their Provincial Junior A hockey record (4-5-2) fall below .500 after a 6- 3 loss at home against Georgetown on Friday followed by a 5-4 loss on the road to the Hamilton Kilty B's Monday night. In both' games, Blades general Manager George McDonald blamed the teams inability to play three solid periods of hockey for the losses. In the Friday game, the Blades suffered a third period letdown and on Monday night they gave the game away in the opening period of play. Georgetown 6, Oakville 3 A two-man power play proved costly for the Blades as they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Georgetown Raiders Friday. The Raiders, while down 3-2 and on a two- man advantage, scored two late second period power play goals to shift the momentum, take the lead and keep it for good. McDonald felt it was their goalie, Matt Collaton, who kept them in the game in the late stages. McDonald felt, though, there was a lack of spirit near the end of the game, after two strong periods. "They were intimidated. Our goalie was getting knocked down and there was no one to help or do anything." It showed during the third period on a scramble for a loose puck in the Raiders' zone. Collaton and a Raider attacker met, knocking Collaton off his feet. The Blades netminder was shaken up but stayed in the game. McDonald feels the lack of aggressive play is because of injuries to two key players on the team, Stu McCrimmon and Gavin Milligan. Oakville carried the action through the first two periods with multiple chances in front of the net. They would not stop with just one shot at Raiders' goalie Jeff Hladysh. They kept shooting the puck at him, but he would not let the puck in the net most of the time. In a losing cause, the line of Perry Ryerson, Mike Lukajic and Chris Knighton provided all the points: Ryerson had two goals and an assist, Lukajic had a goal and two assists, and Knighton added three assists. Georgetown saw their offence come from goals by Tristan Fairbam, Bob LaRose, Stace Page, Mike Knoepfli, Joe Tenute and Scott MacDonald. Adding two helpers were Knoepfli, Bemin Scanlon and Adam Bertoli, and singles from LaRose, MacDonald, Page, Brydon Butterworth and Ryan Fairbam. Hamilton Kilty B's 5, Oakville 4 On Monday night, the Blades lacklustre play at the start of the game saw them fall behind 5- 1 in the first period. Once again, McDonald felt the scaore could have been much worse without the play of Collaton in net. The GM credited the young goaltender with stopping five breakaways and said the five goals were scored on second and third attempts by the Kilty B's. "They could have easily had 10 or 11 goals," said McDonald. Lukajic scored twice and added an assist to lead the Blades offensive attack. Mark Pinnizzotto and Bobby Jaggered rounded out the Blades goal scoring. Mike Tarantino had three assists in the game and Jaggered helped on two goals. Mike Porter had one assist. The Blades' next home game is Friday night, when they take on the Brampton Capitals.
